Tayo Says He Was Shocked When Idris Was Announced As The Winner Of Big Brother Hotshots

image

Tayo still insists that the selection of Tanzanian contestant, Idris as the winner of the 2014 Big Brother Africa edition was not right.
Speaking to Ebuka on ‘Rubbin’ Minds’ on Sunday, the Nigerian model said that he could not see any outstanding moment or performance of Idris in the highlights of the the programme that he reviewed some days ago.
“When the announcement was made that Idris had won the money, I was shocked, it was like a dream I thought maybe IK was joking.” he said.
Explaining why he feels he deserved to win and not Idris, Tayo said, “You see, when you were in your classroom when you were at school, am sure you knew the best students in your class, you knew who would score like maybe 80/100 and you’d be like this guy deserves it, you know someone that would score 60 and you’d be like, eh you, how did you do it! I know you can not even struggle to get 30.
“When I was left in the house with Idris, he was feeling the heat, he was screaming, ‘Tayo, Tayo, where are you, where are you’ I was just smiling like, no, I knew, I could analyse everybody and some things.
“Some people have told me since I got out that, I seemed like a spiritual person in the house and I would like to believe in that like my instincts are very sharp. I could feel things even when I can’t see them or even when they’ve not happened already.
“And then when we were on stage when they were showing the highlights. I saw my own highlights for the first time, watching myself on TV what I have been doing in the house and I was entertained and when they were showing Idris’, I was waiting for that punchline but I did not see anything! so in my mind I was like, it’s done.
“But then when it was announced that he was the winner, I was like, oh ok, I was shocked. There was no time that I cried or was down, nothing. But I respect destiny, when God makes something happen, you have no right to question it, what is happening right now, let’s take it as the best for me.
“Millions of people consider me their winner already, everywhere we go people rush out to me, so that is important to me. I feel like a winner, I don’t feel like I’ve lost anything but the person that got the money may be different.”
Asked how he thinks Idris would feel with his comments about his selection, he said: “I don’t know, am not supposed to care. It is not supposed to be my own problem how he feels. I have the right to my own opinion no body can take that away from me if I feel like that. I congratulated him, I wish him all the best and I hope he uses the money wisely because money is variable factor, it comes and goes especially when you don’t know what to do with it and you use it wrongly. I don’t have anything against him, I have moved on with my life but unfortunately I can not escape questions like this because these interviews are still going on. So I will still say the same thing the way I feel.”
He added that he is not in touch with Idris but among the 26 fellow housemates, he is in touch with Trezagah, Frankie, Esther, Lilian and M’am Bea.

Lilian: I Want A God-fearing Man That Can Give Me Attention

image

Former Big Brother Hotshots housemate, Lilian Afegbai is already enjoying life after the reality show.  It is gradually bringing her fortune and fame with series of endorsements from Multichoice and scripts from Nollywood.  She is on her way to fulfilling her dreams.

The actress and model spoke to Sidekick Media Inc. about the Big Brother experience and her ideal man.

How will you describe life after Big Brother Africa?

Life has been fun.  It has been different and adventurous.  I have had more opportunities.  I think generally my life is much more better because it has given me a rich platform to showcase myself.  It is left for me to use the platform very well.

How will you describe the Big Brother experience?

It wasn’t easy.  Before we went into the house, we were camped somewhere because of the fire incident. It was new, I have not really lived with that number of people.  It wasn’t easy but I had to remain happy. I told myself that I should be happy.  It was fun.

Were you optimistic the show would continue despite the inferno?

I am a very positive person.  Whenever anything negative happens or any barrier crops up, I try to see the positive side of it.

What were some of the lessons you learnt from the show?

I learnt that you can never say you cannot do something without trying it out first.  Big Brother explored the things you never believed you could do. I have learnt that you should give back to the society, no matter how small.  Big Brother used the platform to help someone.  I have learnt to give back to the society.

You didn‘t stay long in the house, do you think there were certain things you did not do right?

I did not stay long in the house.  It had nothing to do with what I was doing right or wrong. It was just unfortunate that I and Tayo were up for eviction the same time. It is always difficult when two people from the same country are up for eviction the same time.  For me, I don’t think it was about doing anything right or wrong.  Big Brother is about being yourself. I was just myself.

Any hard feeling that you didn’t stay long in the house?

No.  Actually, like I said, I am a very positive person, I used it to my advantage.  Since I came out, I have done a couple of endorsements.  I have an acting job going on too.  There is a reason for everything.

Who were your closest friends on the show?

I have like two, three – Tayo and Small Pepper, the girl from Uganda, Esther.  They were both real. I wouldn’t say it was because Tayo is a Nigerian.  If the Nigerian was annoying, I wouldn’t make such a friend.  Tayo was a friend, a brother. He will tell me to my face if I am misbehaving.  Esther was a real girl, I love her so much.

There was a time you referred to Samantha as your friend?

Yes, she was a friend at a time too. I have some people I didn’t like.  I can’t call them enemy.  It is not possible to like everybody equally.

What has been keeping you busy since you got back?

Since I got back, I have been doing jobs, endorsements. I also got an acting job too.  I will be shooting very soon, I got endorsement with Multichoice.  I got scripts from Nollywood, my talk show will soon be ready.  I want to start it first quarter of next year.  Before I went for Big Brother, I had already started it.  The aim of the show is to help up and coming talents get closer to their dreams.

Were you disappointed that Tayo did not win?

Yes, I was and I was sad.  I was devastated, I was upset and angry.  I was depressed but I thought about it in the positive sense.  He is going to get bigger deal, he will get more than 300,000 US dollars.  I believe in him.

Was that why you wept inconsolably?

Yes, because I was hurt. If Tayo was not real, I wouldn’t support him.  When you see the truth, you wouldn’t pretend.  Tayo is my hero, he is my winner.

A lot of people criticized the choice of winner, they believe Idris was not supposed to win?

I can’t say Idris was not supposed to win.  Africa voted him as the winner, he has a strong competition but to me, I had another favourite.  Tayo was my favourite.

A lot of Nigerians have said they will not vote in Big Brother again because of what happened in this edition.

One thing Nigerians should know is that voting is not about one’s country, if one million people should vote in Nigeria, it is just one vote. I can’t say anybody was cheated. Idris was also a competition, maybe Africa did not see him as Nigerians saw him.  I can’t say Tayo was robbed or not robbed, Africa had the final say.  Tayo is still my winner, that is my opinion.

Was there any point you saw Tayo as a threat?

When I have a friend, I see life differently.  I don’t see life in a competition anymore. If Tayo won, I will be happy, I will still benefit from it.  We Africans are too jealous, that is why we think otherwise.  I was campaigning for Tayo.  I really wanted him to win.  So I will say no, I didn’t see him as a threat.

Are you in a relationship?

No, I am not at the moment. I had a relationship.  We broke up, parted ways. So, I am single.

Tell us your about your ideal man.

A man that is God fearing, a man that can give me attention, a very hard working man, strong, loving and caring. He must accept me as I am.

Tell us about your background.

I went to Our Lady of Apostle Private School, Benin, Word of Faith College, then Benson Idahosa University.

Kenya: Sabina – President Uhuru Should Reward My Efforts

image

After missing out on the $300,000 cash prize at this year’s BBA Hotshots, former Kenyan contestant, Sabina (above), “wants” president Uhuru Kenyatta to “recognize and reward” her participation in Africa’s biggest TV reality show.

Sabina, who lasted only two weeks in Biggie’s house, asked the president to observe and emulate the trend other African countries have set. She says that a lot of former Big Brother Africa contestants have immensely benefited from the rewards from their governments and well wishers, but former Kenyan housemates are yet to receive such recognition.

“Look at what has just happened to Nigeria’s Tayo. His efforts were rewarded with a prize bigger than what Idris won at the show. And so many others before that have received huge “appreciation” either from their national governments or from well-wishing individuals. However, in Kenya, we don’t show appreciation for our talents. I am, therefore, calling out on our president to just look at what we are doing for this country and do something about it,” she told Word Is.

Sabina is warming up towards hosting an upcoming TV show on a local station as well as lending her acting prowess on several films.

She says: “I will be joining Tanzania’s former BBA housemate, Laveda, in acting in a film she is working on. I am also working on a film, but I will be the producer so my fans may not see me in that one.”

I Was Shocked – Tayo Faniran

image

After putting on a good show at the Big Brother house for 63 days, Tayo Faniran, first runner up and Nigerian housemate, recently returned home and was welcomed with all the pomp befitting a Hotshot.

As is customary, MultiChoice Nigeria, M-Net and proud sponsor, Jameson, threw him a homecoming party which took place at the popular Cova Lounge, in Victoria Island, Lagos. Speaking with the media shortly before his party, Tayo said he was shocked when Idris Sultan of Tanzania was declared the winner of the reality show.

However, the 28-year-old model and new dad explained that the interaction with other Africans in the Big Brother house and the exposure to the rich and diverse cultures in Africa have adequately prepared him to further pursue a career in acting, singing, or as a TV presenter.

image

He said, “I was really shocked when IK declared Idris the winner of the show. I genuinely thought I would win, or at least be declared a co-winner! Nonetheless I’m incredibly grateful for the unique opportunity and exposure Big Brother has given me. All I can tell Nigerians, Africa and the rest of the world now is ‘watch this space!’”.

MultiChoice general manager, Marketing, Martin Mabutho, expressed the company’s pride in the reality show’s ability to bring Africans together.

“MultiChoice, M-Net, and the show’s partners worked hard to make this season of Big Brother Africa bigger than the last and we thank all stakeholders for their support,” he said.

Efosa Aiyevbomwan, publicity and talent lead for M-Net (West), said “we work hard to make each edition of Big Brother Africa bigger than the last and this year provided yet another mix of excitement, intrigues and incredible entertainment for our viewers.”

The reality show which began with 26 housemates successfully came to an end on Sunday, 7 December 2014.

Ellah Reveals She Had Plans To Marry Idris

image

Ellah and Idris were often seen snuggling under the covers. They even kissed several times as they enjoyed their time in the Big Brother house. But after their mothers visited and cautioned them during the freeze task in the second to the last week of the show, things changed and they ended up in a complicated situation as the 21-year-old Tanzanian photographer couldn’t decide whether he wanted to be with Ellah or not.
This of course made her most upset, but the 24-year-old Ugandan beauty queen couldn’t help all her infatuation.

In an interview with Sidekick Media Inc., Ellah, real name Stellah Nantumbwe, has revealed that she had plans to marry the Big Brother Hotshots winner.
Read excerpts below;

Who updates your Twitter handle?

I do, but sometimes there is administrator who helps me to keep it active. People like it when you are in touch with them.

How have you been since returning from Big Brother Africa?

Life has changed, but for the better. I am proud of what I have achieved so far.

You were on the Scoop ‘n Scoop show on Urban TV.

That was my first time on TV as a presenter. I was not nervous. I was just myself. I guess the cameras in the Big Brother House helped a lot.

Who is your ideal man?

Definitely Idris Sultan. He has a great masculine body. I think he has all the qualities any woman would want.

Tell us about Idris. Was the relationship real?

I do not know about him, but for me, it was real. Right now, we are settling back into our lives. We will see if we still have the feelings for each other.

Has he called since Big Brother ended?

We are in touch. But I cannot tell you to what extent.

Idris is 21 and you are 24. Does the age difference matter to you?

For me, it is about maturity, not age.Did you have any plans of marrying him?

Yes, but we decided to put our relationship on hold. This is because when money is in control, a lot can happen. We shall give ourselves some time.

Didn’t you worry that your boyfriend back at home was watching, while you cried over Idris?

At that moment, I did not care at all. I just wanted to follow my heart, be myself and be happy.

What puts you off about a guy?

Being aggressive, manipulative and having self-pity.You were very laid back at the start of the game.

You get very anxious when you enter the BBA House: You do not know what to expect. But soon, it gets easier as you interact with your housemates. The diary room sessions and the cameras remind you that you are not in isolation. Just knowing there are people outside who are around you is comforting.

Viewers across the continent thought ‘Biggie’ had a crush on you?

It was a good friendship. We always had a good conversation. I guess he was so kind to me because of my character. I did not forgot to tell him “thank you” after every session.Did you meet Biggie after BBA?
I did not and I would not want to meet the person behind the voice. It is just nice that the voice makes you feel like someone is watching over you, like a real big brother.

Is Idris going to share the money with you?

I do not know. But I want to make my own money.

What if you found out that he had a stable girlfriend back at home?

Honestly, I would totally understand that and move on with my life.

What do you think of sex before marriage?

I think one should do what they feel is comfortable for them.

You and Esther did not really like each other and yet you are from the same country, why?

It is just that she preferred different kind of company.

What next after Big Brother?

There are some songs I recorded while in the house. The first one I am going to record is about Idris.

The 2014 Big Brother Hotshots housemates plan a fundraising for cancer patients at the Windhoek Central Hospital.

image

This follows a two day visit to Namibia by former BBA hotshots housemates Mira from Mozambique and Samantha from South Africa. The two housemates’ visit to Namibia was a call from Namibian representatives in the BBA Hotshots house, Luis Munana and Permithias Owoseb to attend a masquerade eviction party in Windhoek. It was because of this party that Mira and Samantha had the chance to visit the cancer ward at Windhoek’s Central Hospital. Due to the heartbreaking state the patients are in, the housemates decided they will compose a song to raise funds to assist the patients.

Luis and Permithias used the platform to officially perform the song Mirror which they composed while in the BBA house. Moreover, they will release the full album early next year but did not give the exact time. Munana added that next year the housemates will travel across Africa to raise awareness about cancer patients. He further hoped to work on a project with fellow housemates soon but could not disclose the type of project they will venture on. However both Mira and Samantha said their trip to Namibia was nothing else other than a party. “My trip here is just for the party. There is no other business though we are planning to work on something at least in future,” affirms Samantha.

Mira says she enjoyed her stay in the country though it was not her first time  in Namibia. “I lived here for four years in my early childhood and it feels good to be back,” she says. The two were the only ones available because they were evicted after Munana and Permithias while others couldn’t make it because of the BBA Hotshots finale.

Karen: We are definitely ready to have a baby. Having a family with children is definitely part of our future plans.

Sidekick: Tell us something about Karen, why you chose her?

Yaro: Karen is a person that can surprise you a lot. I still can’t put my finger on it, which is part of the mystery in the relationship, but I think it’s exactly what that made her successful in Big Brother and beyond.

Asked about his immediate plans, he said: “I just want to reconnect with my loved ones. I’m making plans to spend time with everyone. I’ve really missed them.”

He said the hardest part of being on the show was knowing that he was the subject of so much attention.

“Africa was watching me 24/7. I’ve never experienced anything like that,” he said.

“There were a lot of perceptions of me in the house, a reputation for playing with women’s feelings, but I don’t think I would have made it as far as I did if that was true.

“Africa voted for me because they saw the real me and I am happy about that.”

Under the show’s format, each week the housemates secretly chose two people to be put up for elimination and explained why they wanted them ejected.

Those with the most votes go forward to a vote by the audience, who have the final say in whether a housemate can stay or must leave.

Nigerian contestants have dominated the previous eight series of Big Brother Africa.

Many viewers posted on social networking sites to say they were pleased that a contestant from somewhere else had won on this occasion.

The start of the series had been delayed by a fire, which destroyed the original Big Brother house at Sasani Studios in Johannesburg.

No-one was injured but the show’s producers were forced to build an alternative set.

Mr Sultan, who originally comes from the city of Arusha in northern Tanzania, is expected to spend several more days in South Africa before returning home.

The gains of winning BBA – Dillish Mathews

image

Dillish

In this lovely chat with Sidekick Media Inc. pretty and sexy Dillish Mathews, winner of the 2013 edition of Big Brother Africa reality show, tells us how winning the show has opened doors and brought her more fame and fortunes.

The Namibian sexpot with a curvy shape also speaks passionately on other issues concerning her person and career. Enjoy the encounter.

What informed your decision to participate in BBA?

I’ve always been a great fan of the show. So I promised myself that once I was old enough I would enter the show and the rest, like they say, is now history.

How did you feel when you saw yourself as one of the last four standing in the house?

It was confusing! I never imagined I would go that far in the game, but thank God I finally won.

Were you prepared when you were announced the winner of BBA 2013?

No, no one can ever be prepared for news like that. It took me two weeks to realise what had happened to me. It was a dream come true and I cannot stop thanking all those that made it possible.

What happened after you became the winner?

I’ve been travelling a lot since then. I just opened my salon, finished shooting my first movie then I recently launched my lip stick line. Visit http://www.vaultcosmetic.com, for more info.  In fact, I’ve been extremely busy, working and impacting lives positively since winning the crown.

How has your life transformed since then?

Things are way better now, I get lots of free stuff and more smiles from people. Sincerely, the love and support have been overwhelming and I hope and pray it continues to grow.

What has fame done for you?

It has opened a lot of doors for me and people are more willing to do business with me now and that’s important to me. You cannot quantify the gains of winning such a continental reality show.

What can’t you do now; that you loved doing before BBA?

I can’t always say what I wanted to and I can’t really go to certain places anymore. Don’t forget that stardom has its own challenges too. The important thing is for one to adapt and make appropriate changes in line with your new status.

You seem to have fallen in love with Nigeria as a country; what are you doing here at the moment?

Oh, I love Nigeria, yes. I just finished my first Nollywood movie and hoping to do more jobs here in your country. It has been fun and cool working here in Nollywood. I love the warm reception here.

You did a fantastic video with Flavour; how were you contacted for that job?

They reached me through an ex housemate. I’m so happy they chose me for the job , and also I look forward to doing more jobs with Nigerian entertainers.

What else should Africans be expecting from the stable of Dillish?

Lots of work, especially charitable activities, unity of African business women and the rest would be a huge surprise to all, mostly my fans.

You were in a serious relationship with someone from your country before BBA; how far has that relationship gone?

We are not together anymore, due to irreconcilable reasons. And I want to keep that issue private.

What’s the relationship between you and Melvin?

Melvin is my good friend. It was fun sharing the house with people like him.

The news making the rounds is that you are very close to some politicians in Nigeria; especially the Edo State governor?

Well, yes, I like his works, nothing else. He is now like a father to me. He had no idea who I was then and he has hosted so many pageants in Edo State, which was part of what attracted him to me.

All Eyes on Kelly Rowland on the Red Carpet & Stage at Darey Art-Alade’s Love Like a Movie II in Lagos

image

And Ms. Kelly rules the night!

American music superstar Kelly Rowland was live at Darey Art-Alade‘s Love Like a Movie: The Love Roller Coaster show yesterday Saturday 15th February 2014 at the Oceanview Grounds, Victoria Island, Lagos.

image

She co-hosted the red carpet and performed on stage.

image

The last time Kelly was in Nigeria, she fainted on stage but this time, Kelly bravely took to the stage with the clear intention of rocking it. She performed a lot of her songs as well as some Destiny’s Child tracks which everyone present couldn’t help but move to.

Kelly had two looks for the night.

image

On the red carpet, she arrived in an Ankara sequined crop top and pants. Rocking her short hairstyle, she styled the piece with diamond stud earrings, a black crystal necklace, a selection of silver bracelets and brown sandals.

image

On the stage, she once again showed off her toned abs in a print short sleeve crop top and pants. She accessorized with a gold necklace and black boots.

Her manager and fiancé Tim Witherspoon was present to support his leading lady. Our cameras snapped Tim enjoying his time at the show; he even took out his iPhone to take a photo of our photographer…how cute!

Brandy Norwood who will performing at the Classic FM show, was also present at the concert.

Enjoy these first photos.

Big Brother Mzansi “Secrets” Launches!

image

BIG BROTHER MZANSI SECRETS began last night (Sunday, 2 February) at 19:00 and if the sensational two hour launch show is anything to go by, the latest South African edition of the hit reality TV series will deliver non-stop entertainment! Big Brother himself introduced host Lungile Radu who quickly got down to the tasks of the day…revealing the Big Brother house, the new Big Brother housemates and a whirlwind of surprises. Along the way, top South African performers took to the stage on a night ofaction, drama and SECRETS!

With a R 1 million cash prize on offer for the ultimate winner, BIG BROTHER MZANSI SECRETS got off to a flying start when popular kwaito house band Uhuru, featuring Oskido, thrilled audience members with their runaway hit Ytjukutja, accompanied by the ever dynamic dancers from Soweto’s Finest!

Then it was time for audiences to get a look at the all new Big Brother house, a modern and luxurious home away from home for the new housemates. Featuring a stylish garden, living area, bathroom, open-plan kitchen, diary room, storeroom and two communal bedrooms, the house is decked out in beautiful brown earth tones, with splashes of white, wood and glass finishes and indigenous plants featured throughout. With the house waiting to welcome its new inhabitants, Lungile began the exciting job of introducing the housemates.

First up was assistant Kat (23) rocking a gorgeous silver dress and heels. She was quickly followed by fashion entrepreneur Mzamo (27) in black pants and tapestry jacket. And in a twist no-one saw coming, the two were given a ‘secret mission’ from Big Brother straight away, to take complete ownership of the house and to behave as the official house hosts. They were given strict instructions that no other housemates could be told their mission until the following morning’s exercise session!

With the fashion forward duo on their way to the house, up came regional portfolio manager MK (32), in a bright yellow jacket, and again Big Brother had a secret mission up his sleeve. Via touch screen message, MK was told to incessantly talk about himself in the house, as a way to irritate his fellow housemates. Once again the mission would last until the following morning’s exercise session and he could tell no-one about it. With three housemates already in the game, rapper Reason took to the stage and wowed the studio audience with his electrifying performance of No Sleep and Bump The Chees Up!

Then Lungile welcomed artist manager Loko (22) in a floor length, form fitting teal coloured gown! Before she could comment on her excitement, Biggie struck again…this time delivering a secret mission via a helmet wearing, suit clad, anonymous messenger! Loko’s mission – she had to adopt the bad habit of chewing gum non-stop until the following morning’s exercise session.

As Loko headed into Biggie’s crib, her spot on stage was taken by spaza shop owner Mandla (24) dressed in a trendy but simple black pants, white shirt, waistcoat and tie combo. With the pattern of events now established, a nurse delivered his secret task …to convince the housemates that he is a hypochondriac with a variety of ailments. After chatting briefly to Lungile, Mandla headed off presumably to cough and sneeze his way through the night.

Housemate 6 and 7, customer care professional Lexi (25) and university student Jase (21) made their debut next. In a short hot pink dress Lexi matched perfectly with Jase whose red jacket made a dramatic fashion statement. Biggie’s secret mission for the good-looking twosome…at least one of them had to be in the house Jacuzzi at all times until the next morning.

Looking elegant in a column styled cream dress, radio account executive Vanessa (23) who soon was joined by Cape Town’s Poolie (29), who kept it streetwise with a cool jeans and jacket look. Their mission came directly via Lungile, who had earlier listened intently to Biggie on his earpiece before telling the pair on stage that their secret mission was to memorise the surnames of their fellow housemates and be ready to confirm these to Biggie at a moment’s notice!

With 9 housemates in the house, Lungile surrendered the spotlight to award-winning DJ Ganyani who kept the energy pumping with his explosive hit Feel It, featuring Si Anne. But there were still housemates to come…and soon radio DJ Sol (26) whose funky white glasses and hip sneakers accessorised a red jacket and grey hat, was meeting university student Lola (23) dressed in full length pretty pink chiffon. Lungile retrieved their secret mission from Biggie via a touch screen message in which Big Brother instructed Lola and Sol to dance in the house, every time they see the LED lights on the diary room door flashing.

With dancing high on the agenda, Tembisa Revolution showed off their brilliant moves before audiences met Thando (23) whose flowing black dress cinched with gold belt surely caught the eyes of the four gorgeous men Biggie sent to deliver her secret mission…to collect and wear a piece of clothing from each of her fellow housemates! With all 12 housemates safely in the house, Lungile then announced Big Brother’s next shocker …whilst housemates are expecting a 91 day stay, viewers were told that the show was in fact, just 63 days long!

And just when audiences thought Biggie’s secrets were done he sprang his biggest surprise of the night… a secret house CHAMBER, complete with six blindfolded chamber-mates who are competing for 2 available housemate spaces in BIG BROTHER MZANSI! Lungile promptly interviewed all six, meeting marketing coordinator Mbali (26), model Iris (21), fashion PR consultant Nku (29), aspiring filmmaker Kgosi (25), event and venue manager Jenayne (23) and part-time model Paris (23). Lungile also let the audiences in on another secret…Nku is a roommate of Mzamo in real-life though Mzamo has no idea that she’s competing for a spot in the show!

Kelly Rowland to headline Love like a Movie By Peju Akande

image

Guess who’s coming for Valentine? It’s Kelly Rowland, the American pop singer and member of the former group Destiny’s Child, who has also made a successful solo career.

Rowland will headline this year’s Love Like a Movie, an annual Valentine concert organized by Darey Art Alade to thrill fans to an unusual experience of music, comedy and dance.

The concert is scheduled to hold on 15 February, 2014 at the popular Eko Hotel Expo Centre in Victoria Island.

Last year, the concert featured a blink-and-you-miss-her appearance by Kim Kadashian, the American reality TV show star. Kim’s quick exit from the show set off a lot of negative talks about the concert.

However, it didn’t ruin the fact that the show was one of the best organized in the country last year. Darey has promised to up the ante this year by bowling fans over with an even more impressive show.

There will also be a crew of Nigeria’s finest artistes lined up for the concert, among them are D’banj, Tiwa Savage, Seyi Shay, Mo ‘Eazy, Zaina, Timi Dakolo, Waje, Muna, JJC and Eva.

It has been a steady rise to fame for me – Sean Tizzle

image

So many people hardly known him as Seun Morihanfen. But lovers of his music call him Sean Tizzle. Ever since the release of his hit song ‘Sho le’ , the stylish entertainer has been winning laurels, playing major gigs, and proving his mettle in the Nigerian showbiz terrain. The graduate of theatre Arts, University of Ibadan reveals in this interview how he got his big break and why he thinks he deserved winning the highly rated awards at ‘The Headies’ which held last year.

What ignited your passion for music?

I just found myself doing music. I have this uncle who is a gospel rapper. I was inspired by him. I approached him for counsel  and he thought me the basics of doing music.

How has your theatre Arts background empowered your music?

It has  really helped me to be able to showcase my artistic side. There was this course I did back in the university that focused on drama and music. It was one of my favourite  courses. Now, when I am shooting a music video the theatre and dance part of what I learnt in school comes to play .I learnt how to make acting reality , and reality become acting. It has really empowered me in every aspect of showbiz.

What was it like breaking into the music industry?

It’s been wonderful, dropping my first official single February 22, 2013, and the response it got has been amazing. My first single has been a blessing. Months after dropping the album, it has opened countless doors of opportunities. Putting the single   out wasn’t really a challenge.
The challenge I had was getting to publicize the song and knowing the right people one can leverage on in order to generate publicity for the song, and seeking the advice of people who have achieved the kind of success we desired. Before the big break, I was just an upcoming artiste trying to get my big break. I have always been doing music since my secondary school days in Ibadan .I was part of a group called  ‘The 2B1’

What was your parents’ reaction when you ventured into music?

Amazingly, my parents supported me from day one. They are so proud of me and what I do. Their support has been encouraging. I actually went home sometime last year and everyone came out to welcome me. It’s a great feeling.

What inspired your hit song ‘Sholee’?

For me, every inspiration comes from God. That song was inspired by God. Not forgetting the beat made by my boss Dee-tunes. It wasn’t as if it was pre-mediated that the story line  should go in that direction. It just came  and  that I am grateful to God.

Did you ever expect to go this far?

Should I be cursing myself ? For me, everything I have recorded is a hit . With God and hard work, everything I do should be  a hit. I don’t expect to hit it big suddenly. For  me, it has been a steady rise to fame.

What label are you signed on to?

I am signed on to Difference Entertainment .I am the only artiste signed on to the label for now and Dee-tunes happens to be the CEO. We have been together since 2008. He produces virtually all my songs and the chemistry I have with him has been great. He is a friend not just a boss. We know how to draw the line when it comes to doing business and maintaining our friendship. When it comes to business we do business, and when it comes to having fun, we don’t hesitate to do that too. We meet   two to three times in a week to think of ways to push the brand.

There was an allegation of a breach of contract when you were signed on to Sound Sultan’s label?

Sound sultan is like an uncle, brother and friend to me. I was hustling those days being carried by the winds of life. I was  affiliated to the group.

What are your plans for 2014?

I have plans to drop more videos and my album will also be dropping this year. The album will be titled’ The Journey’ dropping in April. It’s going to be a great album , you don’t want to skip any track. My fans should look out for hits that I have cooked for ages.

Did you expect to win the next rated award at ‘The Headies’?

I have worked and my team has worked as well .I was actually looking forward  to winning, but I wasn’t sure .Seyi Shay, Dammy Krane, and Burnaboy were part of the artistes nominated, these are great artistes .It was a tight category. Since the winner was chosen by voting  , I canvassed for votes via social media, and I want to use this medium to thank my fans for voting for me .I was happy when I was declared as the winner, I couldn’t control it.

What does winning an award do to an artiste’s career?

For me, it’s a way of appreciating your work and your intellectual property. On the other hand, it also encourages you to work hard and not to rest on your laurels.

Do you consider yourself as an A-list artiste?

It’s not for me to decide .I am about making good music and promoting my music. Let my fans be the judge .I am just committed to making good music, am not really bothered about where I am placed.

What is that one thing people hardly know about you?

People hardly know that I am playful .I love playing video games and watching movies. My favorite game is play station.

How do you handle social media criticism?
The truth is that they love you enough to criticize you. If I am criticized for doing something wrong, I just try and look into it to see how I can improve on my craft. If they don’t love me, they won’t be bothered about saying something about me. I read comments on blogs and even laugh at some of the comments ,but I get angry at times.

What is your definition of a sexy woman?

Everybody is beautiful ,the sexiness should come from within. You have to be homegrown, God fearing and possess a good attitude.

Rapper Eldee advocates for gay rights, as fans go wild!

image

Nigerian Rapper,  Eldee went on social media a few hours ago to voice his support on the rights of gays in Africa eliciting a whirlwind on social media. He voiced his support following the post made by Mr Richard Branson CEO Virgin Group who posted…

image

Eldee had quickly followed suit with his own post

image

“Hopefully, one day soon, Africa will realize that the #anti-gay sentiment is no different from racial or religious discrimination. #RaceCreedSexualOrientation #Discrimination

His post is now trending hot on social media with majority of the comments suggesting Eldee may have burned himself this time;

Jacob De Cleopas on a famous blog wrote:

“No elDee. I won’t hate u. Not yet. But th next time you speak, pls connect tongue to the brain. We are Africans and gay in all its ramifications is anti- Africans. Talking about free will to do what one pleases, I pray we won’t see that day when some group of over zealous psychos will advocate for the right to kill when u feel

Another online commentator wrote:

“I said it earlier, the devil in the last days will use idol figures in political, economical, media, religious, entertainment sector to influence and institute his own ideals in the world, watch out for them especially in the entertainment sector, it is a very vital sector for the devil to lead many away with too much wealth and make the world too attractive for you to bother about heaven, also easy to influence the youth with entertainment, u guys aint seen or heard nothing yet, more revelations to come, very soon most will reveal their logos”

But not all of the comments have swung hard at Eldee. A strong supporter wrote “I think he is right if you wanna love a goat its your problem and if you a gal and wants a gal then its your decision, nobody should force anybody into what they don’t want they will answer for themselves on judgement day…”
Majority have called him out to take down the post on his wall but Eldee has made no further comments on the isuue and has not removed the post.

Karen Igho Tweets She Has Cancer

image

While the entire nation is getting ready for the festive season in high spirits, there is one person out there whose excitement has been ruined.

Big Brother Africa Star and socialite Karen Igho announced via Twitter on Wednesday that she has been diagnosed with cancer.

Shortly before she became a housemate on the Big Brother Amplified reality show in 2011, she had the lumps in her breasts checked out and she was treated for it.

Though she didn’t specify what form of cancer she has, she mentioned that she will be undergoing treatment soon.

While the celebrity took to Twitter to air out her heavy heart, some Nigerians acted very cruel towards her, obviously delighting in the fact that she has a terminal disease.

It was a colourful ceremony last weekend at the Le’ Meridien Hotel, Uyo, Akwa-Ibom State, when the winner of the popular television reality show, Gulder Ultimate Search Season 10, Dennis Okike was unveiled.

Anchored by the task master himself, Chidi Mokeme, the event which has the governor of the host state, Godswill Akpabio in attendance with members of his cabinet also witnessed the unveiling of winner of the one day ultimate fans edition in the person of Comrade Kalu Kalu. He smiled home with an SUV and a mouth watering cash prize. Number one African rapper, MI spiced up the event as he thrilled the audience with his electrifying performance.

However, elated Okike shares his experience while in the jungle, as well as what he intends to do with the ₦10 million prize money.

How do you feel as the winner of the 10th edition of Gulder Ultimate Search?

I have longed for this for three years. I worked very hard and I prayed to become the winner.. It was not my own personal efforts, God has hand in it, and without God I would not get to where I am today.

While the search lasted, you suddenly became daring which was not part of you from the beginning?

My parents will always say when you are in a different environment, observe the people, and the environment very well. When I was in the jungle I had to learn from people, and their mistakes, and not to make the same mistake. I learned from my own mistakes too. I kept pushing forward; I never allowed anything to distract me.

What was your most challenging task in the jungle?

It was the first individual task that we had. I had to go under the log. I don’t want to remember it again. It was very humiliating, but as God would have it, I was second to the last person in the task. It is just that whatever situation you find yourself in, if you think you are actually the last, you nee to remain focus and be prayerful. It’s not how far, but how wel!

How would you describe this year’s GUS?

Gulder Ultimate Search is a television reality show that takes place yearly. I have tried it for three years. Last year, I got to the final stage, but I was not picked. I kept on trying until I entered the jungle this year. GUS is different from other reality shows, you could see it on TV how it is like. It is glaring for everyone to see. It is not artificial, it is original.

Now that you have won teh show, what’s the next level for you?

It is God first. He will lead me to my next level. I have lots of ideas, just like every other young man out there. I have to allow God direct my path. Whatever He says I will take it up from there. N10 million is a lot of money, but it does not change anything. If one doesn’t plan well, one will just blow it up, but if you plan ahead of time and you let God take control, you will achieve great success.

When you found the Golden Scepter, what came to your mind?

The experience was out of this world. It was something every other contestant wanted to experience; God actually helped me to discover the Golden Scepter. There were instances I would have been evicted, but God made me to come out a winner. Finding the Golden Scepter was the climax of it all, and I realised God’s faithfulness in my life. God was actually with me all through. He actually proved that all my fasting and prayers are not in vain. Every effort I put in to get to the last stage actually came to pass. I give God the glory. It was not easy.

Who do you consider the most challenging person among the last four contestants?

The truth is, finding the Golden Scepter could be anybody; I know Ifunanya has great ability and instinct just as I do, it could have been her. But the point is that it could be anybody.

The person I actually believe was going to find it is myself. I know myself to the extent that if I really want to something I don’t care what happen, I go ahead and do it. I told myself that if I didn’t find it, I will not forgive myself; each time I was searching I kept on praying.

What is going to change about you now that you have N10 million and a new car?

Nothing will change about me, it is just that I am a new personality, money can change your personality. But I am still going to be the same me. Anybody can actually have the same opportunity, but it depends on what you make of it. You can get N10million and in the next six months you are nowhere, but the truth is that I already have plans for myself.

But by now you would have thought of what you want to do with the money?

The truth is that you don’t make choice in a hurry. I might decide to further my education as an engineer. But along the line, something might just come up, we have too much potential in this country. I will work and pray about it and let God decide for me. What He wants me to do that is what I will do.

What were the responses in your family when you won?

The joy in my family was out of this world. Tears of joy ran down my mom’s cheeks as well as my siblings. I am the only son and I know what will be going through their minds right now.

Baby face saga: Don Jazzy dumps Wande Coal, releases statement

Mavin Records has released a statement that officially announces the exit of ‘Go Low’ hit maker Wande Coal from Mavin Records.

The statement reads…

It is with deep regret that we officially announce the departure of recording artist Wande Ojosipe, popularly known as Wande Coal, from Mavin Records due to irreconcilable differences.

Over the past few months, Mavin Records has made a concerted move to consolidate its position in the Nigerian music industry. Mavin has pursued a renewed ethos to raise its standards of quality and professionalism to a world-class level. Wande’s vision has not aligned with ours and a few months ago all parties mutually agreed that a separation would be the best course of action.

Legal parties on both sides have spent the past six months trying to reach an amicable solution in terms of musical property rights. However the decision by Wande Coal to release ‘Baby Face’ purportedly as his own material is a direct breach of intellectual property law and compelled an immediate clarification on our part.

Both Mavin Records and Wande Coal have enjoyed a remarkable run in the course of their working relationship. It is unfortunate that conflicting priorities contributed to the premature curtailment of a hitherto fruitful accord.

Mavin Records reaffirms its goal to constantly provide high quality music to our fans and introduce new and exciting talent into the industry.

We wish Wande Coal the best of luck in all his future endeavours.

Signed

Mercy Johnson replies marketers on proposed ban.

Nollywood actress, Mercy Johnson has reacted to the proposed plan by movie marketers to ban her for being too expensive; making it clear she would not back down on her figures.

Mercy reportedly charges between N1.8 to N2m for her movie roles.

Sidekick had earlier reported of underground plans by the movie marketers under the aegis of the Film and Video Producers and Marketers Association of Nigeria, FVPMAN, to blacklist Mercy Johnson Okojie,, in what they call, “ Withdrawing of service from her.”

Nollywood stars, Omotola Jolade Ekeinde, Genevieve Nnaji, Richard Mofe Damijo and Nkem Owoh in 2005 were the first Nollywood stars to reportedly come under the blacklist hammer of marketers after they allegedly began charging N1m for their roles.

The alleged blacklist ultimately gave other actresses like Ini Edo and Uche Jumbo the opportunity to rise to stardom.

Mercy has been warned she may suffer severe consequences if she refuses to back down.

Should she?

Movie marketers threaten to blacklist Mercy Johnson

There are underground plans by the movie marketers under the aegis of the Film and Video Producers and Marketers Association of Nigeria, FVPMAN, to blacklist Mercy Johnson Okojie,, in what they call, “ Withdrawing of service from her.”

A highly placed source who disclosed this latest move against the Actress to Sidekick, said, the association decided to take this action, following the ‘unbecoming attitude of the actress as it affects her work.”

According to our source, members of the association met last Monday, in Onitsha, Anambra State, to fine-tune plans to blacklist the actress who recently returned to Nollywood after months of being away in the United States, where she gave birth to her first child.

Shedding more light on the reason for blacklisting the Actress, our source disclosed that the marketers accused Mercy Johnson of forming the habit of disappearing while on location after she has been paid for the job. She was also accused of given them difficult conditions.

However, the source further hinted that the marketers have vowed to sanction any member who disregard the decision to blacklist the actress. He also revealed that the leadership of the association has advised its members to release all the films that Mercy Johnson featured in, on or before January, 2014.

Meanwhile, efforts to contact Mercy to react to the allegations proved abortive as her cell-phone was permanently switched-off. Recall, however, that upon her return to Nollywood, Mercy was bombarded with several scripts from different marketers and producers who wanted to get her on their movies.

I’ve disappointed critics of my musical career – Ego

image

Ego

Singer Ego Ihenacho Ogbaro believes music has made her a deeper person. The petite lady was the only female vocalist with Lagbaja’s band until she left to pursue a solo career in 2007. She has backed-up for the masked musician on several tracks including ‘Konko Below’ and ‘Nothing For You’ but her soulful wailing in ‘Never far Away’, a track in Lagbaja’s ‘Africano’ album, remains indelible in the minds of fans. Ego spoke with Sidekick Media Inc recently about her life after the split from Lagbaja band.
Enjoy .

Sidekick Media Inc: Who was Ego as a child?

Ego: I was a very stubbortn child and I am still very stubborn(chuckles) because I always wanted my way. It was my way or no way. Although I was a lively child, I didn’t let things get to me or weigh me down.  I easily get angry and  I think I am just myself.

Sidekick Media Inc: How has it been since you left Lagbaja ?

Ego: I always knew that I wanted to sing and it was just a matter of time before the dream manifested.
What I wanted to do was totally different from what I was doing with Lagbaja. It was the same music thing but in a different way. Yes, people would have their doubts and not even know what direction I was going.
It was a step that I had to take, something I had to prove and had to show the world that I knew what I wanted and I was moving in the right direction. So, it’s natural for people to feel that way and have doubts. So far, it’s been good.

Sidekick Media Inc: How long did you work with  him ?

Ego: I  worked with him as a solo artiste for 12 years and I learnt a lot from him, like hard work and not compromising.

Sidekick Media Inc: At what point did you realise that you were going make a career out of music?

Ego: I have always been surrounded by music from my childhood. I’ve always loved music but I took it for granted. When I left secondary school, it was more of  a hobby for me. I joined Colours Band which later became Lagbaja’s band. It wasn’t until then that I began to take it serious. I started going for shows and I was making money from it, so I was like okay, this is something I enjoy doing and I am making money from it; it’s not a bad thing. It was at that point that I began to take it serious and I said to myself, ‘let me give this a shot’.

Sidekick Media Inc: Do you have your own band as well ?

Ego: Yes , it is called Indigo.

Sidekick Media Inc: What inspired you to form a band ?

Ego: I am a live performer, so there was the need to get my own band. This is one of the problems that most artistes face today. They find it very difficult to perform with a live band. It is very important to play with a live band. I first look for those that can form the band with me.
Though, I am not taking anything away from those that use live band; but I just feel that when you use a live band, it’s fun. You can improvise and express yourself. You are not much of a musician if you cannot sing with a live band. I always knew that I was going to use a band. As much as I like singing my own songs, I like singing other people’s song and this was how I even started. Let me state that this is totally different from miming. We do this at events such as weddings, corporate events and other events. It is the same band, that is, Indigo that also backs me up whenever I want to sing as Ego .

Sidekick Media Inc: What are your likes and dislikes?

Ego: Basically, I like real people, down to earth people, intelligent people and the ones that can push me to get a better result. I cannot stand people who are fake but people with fantastic sense of humour.
Since you parted ways with Lagbaja, have you released any album on your own?
Yes , I released an album this year titled First Step but before that,  I have released three singles and two videos and I am very encouraged from the feed-back.

‘Skelewu’ saga: Davido, director blast critics

image

Davido

After dropping two music videos and one instructional dance video, Davido’s “Skelewu” is still the talk of the town. This is not because it’s one of Nigeria’s biggest pop songs of the year but simply because of it’s multiple videos.

During the week, Davido tried to dispel the criticisms trailing the video on his Twitter account. He wasn’t the only person who has reacted to the criticisms. The director of the final video, Moe Musa has also reacted. Overwhelmed by critique on Twitter when the video dropped last Monday, Musa tweeted, “ Love it or hate it, it’s your issue not mine… All you haters out there are full of s**t, lol. ”

Before now, reports said, Davido was not pleased with what Moe Musa shot in the UK for his hit single and planned to shoot another video with Clarence Peters”.

He was said to have already paid Clarence Peters the sum of N7million to shoot a perfect video for him.

Davido releases official ‘Skelewu’ video

image

Skelewu

Following the controversy surrounding the previously shot Skelewu video by celebrity film maker Sesan, the new video shot by Moe Musa has been released as the official video.
Davido rejected the video shot by Sesan after it leaked online. He came on twitter to denounce it, claiming it was not the original version.
Hours after this latest video by Moe Musa came online, comments on preference between the videos shot by him (Moe) and Sesan’s have danced back and forth, creating an almost even poll.
The new Skelewu video was shot in London and released under Davido’s HKN music label.

Flavour keeps mum on neglecting Mc Loph’s mother

image

Flavour

A Nigerian lady, Bianka Johnson, who resides in the United State of America claimed that high-life singer Flavour abandoned his childhood friend’s, MC Loph’s, mother till her death.

Johnson claimed that although she got the late woman’s contact from Flavour, she was shocked when she was informed that the singer never kept in touch with her. The lady also indicted Emeka Morgan, the CEO of Morgan Entertainment, Mc Loph’s record label.

She said that Mc Loph’s mother, who she referred to as Mama, said that the fair-skinned singer never called her since her son passed away.

“Flavour has not picked up the phone to call me since Obiajulu passed away, yet he made a hit tribute song on his behalf. May God be the judge,” she quoted mama.
Johnson said, “I want to set the record straight. Since the death of Mama’s son, MC Loph, Flavour Nabania never called nor visited Mama and he never sent a dime to her for her upkeep.

Flavour hasn’t made any effort to reach out to Nkiru or MC Loph’s infant son. “Mama died from congestive heart failure exacerbated by heartbreak. But for the deaths of her two adult children at the same time, which took an enormous toll on her health, it is my belief that Mama would have lived longer,” she said.
She further claimed that she took care of the old woman till she died.“I took care of Mama until she died to the best of my ability. Today, I am blessed to have an extra angel watching over me. She lost two children at the same time who can never be replaced but before she died, mama gained a grandson, a beautiful daughter in-law in Nkiru, and a daughter in me. Mama is gone, reunited with her children and I know she is at peace now. Mama will be buried on November 12, 2013,” she said.

However, when Saturday Beats contacted Flavour’s camp to react to the allegation against them, they refused to talk. His manager, Benjamin, stated that they had no comment on the issue.
Benjamin said, “We don’t have a reaction to the story. We don’t have a comment. Yes, we have heard the story.”

When probed further, Benjamin said sacarstically, I’m sure you know what no comment means.”

I was called a rejected artiste – KCee

image

Kcee

Artiste, Kingsley Okonkwo, better known as KCee, is making waves at the moment but the young man will not forget how he was seen and in fact, labelled a ‘rejected and dejected’ artiste. No wonder he is still amazed at the height he has achieved since he went solo a couple of years ago.

“God, the industry, and my fans suddenly made me a super attraction of the industry. Every single I drop got me more fans, made me more loved, and ranked me a level higher than where the last track stopped. It’s simply amazing.” KCee said.

Having released some hit singles that have received massive airplay, Kcee said he is all set to launch his debut album.

“It’s amazing how things have turned out so sweetly and successfully for me, my brand, and my budding record label. Releasing a debut album is definitely a major career milestone.”

Monalisa Chinda plans magazine launch in Ghana

image

Monalisa Chinda

Star actress, Monalisa Chinda has disclosed plans to launch her debut magazine, ‘Monalisa’ in Nigeria and Ghana before the end of the year.
Monalisa made this disclosure while speaking at the Fashion and Champagne VIP evening held last weekend at the Villa Monticello Hotel, in Accra. She was honoured alongside other celebrities at the glamorous event.
This is coming weeks after a journalist, Mr. Kelvin Keshi threatened to drag the actress to court over breach of contractual agreement and failure to pay his two months salaries while working for their proposed magazine.
The Catwalq star hinted that she plans to launch the magazine during the first week of November in Nigeria while it will be launched in Ghana in December.
According to her, “Ghana is a place I visit all the time. But for the first time, probably, because Monalisa magazine is a big project I’m about to launch. I had to come with my team to get content for the magazine and also source for a venue for the launch.”

Titled, ‘Take Over’, the album will be released under 5-Star Music. KCee’s first album is made up of 18 Street-Loving joints and a Skit. The joints will include all the super hits Kcee has consistently released in succession: “Give it to Me”, “Okpekete”, “Limpopo”, “Okepete’ remix, “Okoso”, and the recent club-banging, Pull Over featuring Wizkid.
“It’s amazing” Kcee expressed, adding, “how things have turned out so sweetly successfully for me, my brand, and my budding record label. Releasing a debut album is definitely a major career milestone.

It’s simply amazing.”
Featuring some of the  best musical acts in the land, “Take Over” is as symbolic as it is prophetic.
Symbolic because Kcee, with the album, hopes to assemble in one CD, the songs that he has performed at all major events in Nigeria especially since he released Limpopo. Also, prophetic because with the name of the album, Kcee is declaring his vision statement of taking over the music industry and staying on top of his game for many more years to come.

I can’t understand why my father married 27 wives – Femi Kuti

image

Femi Kuti

The 2013 edition of Felabration, a week-long concert which celebrates the life and times of Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti commenced on Monday, October 14 through 20 at the Afrikan Shrine, Ikeja, Lagos. In this interview,  Femi Kuti, the eldest son of Fela went down memory lane, recounting the story of his late father, his music  and ideologies. He also talks about what the fans of Afrobeat music will expect at this year’s Felabration among other issues.

Sidekick Media Inc.:  We learnt that Rita Marley will be headlining this year’s Felabration. Why is she not here today?

Femi: She sent a message few days ago that she was not feeling fine, and might not make it to the event. However, she will be represented at the festival by the head of  her foundation, Rita Marley Foundation.

Sidekick Media Inc.: What’s the financial implication of organising this festival?

Femi: We have no major sponsors at the moment. Fortunately, most of the artistes are performing for free. We have been very lucky that the likes of King Sunny Ade, D’banj, Wizkid, Pasuma, and many others, have been performing for free. This year, they will grace the stage again. But we usually pay a token to the up and coming artistes as a way of supporting them. However, Nigerian Breweries Plc  has promised to come on board next year as a major sponsor of the event. We are hoping that as from next year, Felabration will not be talking about financial difficulties.

Sidekick Media Inc.: What’s new in this  year’s Felabration?

Femi: I think what will always be new is the enthusiasm of the crowd. The festival runs from Monday through Sunday. It kicked off last Monday with school debate. Wuri Modern College won the competition  last year. The Felabration usually kicks off with school debate because we are trying to introduce new  things other than music. There will be symposium where the likes of Femi Falana, SAN,  will be in attendance. The  festival will kick off properly next week Tuesday. It will run till Saturday and closes on Sunday.

Sidekick Media Inc.: Is Bob Marley’s son still going to  make it to the festival?

Femi: I think he’s having problem with obtaining visa. He has agreed to come and the contract has been finalized. We are waiting for  him to obtain his visa. If he succeeds, fine. We  are expecting a lot of Afrobeat bands from America, Ghana and other African countries. Our local artistes such as Tuface, Kwam 1, Davido, Wizkid, Eedris and other superstars including myself will be on duty.

Sidekick Media Inc.: Apart from finance, what other challenges are you encountering?

Femi: I think the major challenges are finance and security. We would love a situation where we would pay the artistes handsomely and dictate the pace for them. But now, they dictate the pace for us. The artistes  decide when and when not to perform on stage. Felabration bends to everybody’s rules. The next thing is to get the museum working. Apparently, Lagos State government  has purchased the piece of land beside the museum  which we use as car park. But we are still looking for major sponsors that will drive the museum. We have big dreams that we want to put in place.

Sidekick Media Inc.: With this year’s Felabration coming up, would you  say  you have achieved the dream of setting up the festival?

Femi: Definitely. We are all Nigerians and we know what it means to run a festival at that level for 13 years. I think we have to be applauded. It’s a feat that hasn’t been achieved in Nigeria. All the great festivals we know in Nigeria are no longer functioning. We have never heard any security challenges in the past 13 years. With the crowd of over 10,000 people attending the festival, I think we have to be commended.  Now, Felabration is observed across the world, especially in major cities of the world. The event my sister, Yeni started has grown big and stronger.

Sidekick Media Inc.: One would have thought that the Fela broadway show would have boosted the festival?

Femi: I’m sure you know what it cost  them to  be in Nigeria  then. They are a cast of about 50 people. By the time you talk about their flight tickets, accommodation, and so on, you would know what I mean. I think it was the Lagos State government that sponsored their trip to the country. Eventually, what we are going to be focusing on is discovering new talents and more bands. I will like  a situation where we do not have only hip-hop artistes on stage.

Sidekick Media Inc.: Aside Felabration, what is the family’s stand on Fela’s biopic being produced by an American company recently?

Femi: I don’t know about it. There are many things I don’t know about. I know that they have been working on the biopic for the past five years.

Sidekick Media Inc.: Andrew Dosumu, a British Nigerian director was chosen to direct the biopic and Nigerian international actor, Chiwenta Ejiofor is being touted to act Fela in the biopic?

Femi: It is the same biopic that we are talking about. This is a biopic that has been in the making for about five years now. I’m sure you know it is not the kind of film that you can produce overnight. They have to capture the burning of the house, the soldiers…If they are going to do a movie of that magnitude, it’s going to be a great movie. It is going to take time. They have been talking about this movie for ages now.

Sidekick Media Inc.: Does the family have any plan to do that?

Femi: No. We are only going to give them  the license to do it. We have a legal team that deals with all of these things. My own duty as a member of the estate is to give the approval. I have signed the contract several years ago and I know, it will take another two to three years before this dream will materialize.  I know that the first contract we signed for five years ought to be renewed if they have not completed the production of the film within the time frame.
They started talking about the film when my father died but eventually the contract expired. So, they had to renew a new contract. This is because there is no money in the music business. That’s why the family has been very lenient when discussing with all these people because we all know about piracy. Everybody is downloading Fela’s music, so you have to be very understandable. We have a good legal team  that handles all these stuffs for the family. Of course, we have to protect the integrity of the family

Sidekick Media Inc.: Looking at it holistically, do you feel comfortable that a Nigerian  who has practically lived abroad all his life is playing the role of Fela?

Femi: I’m sure if they do a movie, it will be great. Now, let us look at the broadway show. Critics say that it was too Americanised. They did not want to show Fela’s story from the Nigerian perspective. They wanted the American and the international market to understand the Fela story. See how Fela was misunderstood even when he went to the United States.  It was after his death that people started evaluating his music. What he was doing? He married 27 wives in his lifetime, how dare he? This man was against feminism.? They gave him different kind of names. He was completely misunderstood because he wore pants, he smoked marijuana. He had issues. He had serious issues whether  we liked it or not. At his death, people were celebrating him but in his lifetime, he was broke before he died.
What they did was to tell the Fela story for the average international market to watch and understand it. If  you did watch them, you would notice that the dancers could not dance the Afrobeat music. For you, the man was speaking American English. But you would have every reason to believe that the Fela you know was not being acted but if you look at it from the neutral perspective like you didn’t know Fela, you would understand the story and even weep for him.
The day I watched it, I cried. I cried because I knew where they were coming from and I saw the audience. Probably, they have not heard about Fela, the Americans were saying, it made them want to listen to his music to know more about Africa. It opened their minds to so many issues. Now, they are studying Afrobeat in many of the schools and universities in America, Germany, France, Sweden, Australia, everywhere. There are over 20 American bands playing Afrobeat at the moment.

Sidekick Media Inc.: Over the years and given what is happening in the country today, will you say your father has been vindicated or  misunderstood while he lived?

Femi: I will answer in the affirmative. He was grossly misunderstood for a purpose because he saw corruption and he knew what corruption was going to do to the country; those involved in corruption wanted to get away with dictatorship and corruption which was what he was against. And because he used his own unconventional way of protesting, it didn’t go down well with the authorities.
Then the authorities controlled the media up to a point until after Daily Times, when other media houses started springing up because we have to remember that it was only government newspapers and TVs  that we had then. So, the story was told from the government’s perspective until The Punch, Vanguard and other magazines were established. Fela’s story could be seen from another point of view.
We have to understand where Fela was coming from in the 60s. Where did the problem start? What was the cause of his problem? And maybe, because he was already a stubborn character, he was going to make matters worse and that was his character and that is the character that people now love.  What kind of man was he, that many people ran away from him, or even compromised him. But  he didn’t have to go through all those beatings? So, I think, he was purposely misunderstood but yes, he has been vindicated.

Sidekick Media Inc.: But you are a different specie?

Femi: I would say, I am probably more diplomatic because I have learnt from what I saw of him. First, you have to understand the political climate which we live in. Let us remember who voted for Obasanjo? Except if we want to be dishonest with ourselves, Obasanjo won the first election, clean and clear. What would Fela have done if he was alive and this same Nigerians still went to vote for this same Obasanjo? Didn’t they hear Fela sing about this man?
Then, it is still these same Nigerians that were criticising this man and they know it. Let us look at our incumbent President. He was declared wanted by the EFCC when he was governor of Bayelsa State and you voted for him. That case was pending in court when Yar’ Adua  made him his Vice. Opposition parties should have objected to his selection. But they didn’t. Again, his former boss late Yar ‘ Adua whom he served under  had a seven point agenda. Where is it today? Jonathan promised that if anything happened to him that he would follow his footsteps. Has he followed his footsteps today?
There are many things you have to understand as Fela’s son. Did Nigerians not hear what Fela talked about? Are they not feeling the same pain that Fela felt when he was alive? Nigerians are still voting for the same corrupt politicians.

Sidekick Media Inc.: Are you worried that government has not been able to honour your father after his death?

Femi: Not at all. The people will always honour my father and he will always be celebrated worldwide. Even Lagos state has honoured him. Even if the family doesn’t celebrate him, Fela has gone beyond the shores of Nigeria. As we speak, New York, Paris, England, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, China, Malaysia, among others still celebrate him.

Sidekick Media Inc.: At over 50, some people say it seems you have become more sexually active?

Femi: That is not true, I am no more sexually active. When you see a beautiful woman, when you reach my age and you have responsibility like myself, you  will know what I am talking about. Before now, as a young man, you would want to go after her.   There are many nights I go and sleep alone not because I don’t have girlfriends or want a girlfriend, when I think of the responsibility I have  in my life, I will immediately have a rethink.
The women in my life also have responsibilities. I can tell you that the mothers of  my  children, we stay together, we are very serious. You could say we are husband and wife but I don’t believe in marriage. I just don’t understand why one man will say I pronounce you man and wife, in that case. I pronounce myself man and wife. I am very different from my father but in a lot of ways like him.
Like I couldn’t understand why he married 27 wives. When he married them, he divorced them. I didn’t have a problem with my father’s wives but my mother did.  When the problem started in Kalakuta, for us it was fun. Many things have changed. Of course I am very much sexually active but when I consider the problems my shoki has given me, it dies quickly.

Everybody knows Big Between Rugged Man, Beverly Osu Brother Africa star, Beverly Osu isn’t a virgin or a girl who would pretend guys are never on her diary but then she doesn’t also come across as a girl with a serial dates history, that is, If you are going to accept 2shot and Angelo being too familiar to count.

Mikel Obi, Rita Dominic becoming an item?

image

Mikel Obi and Rita Dominic

What could a twenty-something year old Chelsea ace, Mikel Obi and a thirty-something year old Nollywood actress, Rita Dominic have in common? At least, this is a question running riot in the minds of people who saw the picture the duo took while Rita was holidaying in London.
Though the story said Rita ran into Mikel but then tongues have been wagging how these two stars with so many hangers-on and itinerary crazy chaperons could accidentally bumped into each. Besides, the arguments hold that several Nollywood stars have been in London without running into anybody, let alone Mikel who has a tight schedule with his ever-stern Chelsea coach, Jose Mourinho breathing down his neck to get in shape to meet his future plans for Chelsea.
But then, one should not forget Rita’s latest outcry that the media have been making a mess of her relationships. So if she doesn’t want to come out to blow the whistle on herself and Mikel, should anyone blame her? Unlike Jim Iyke, at least there is no claim that there are unseen forces keeping her from getting the man of her choice, or is there? If so, they are nothing close to ‘demonic spirits’ or are they?

Peter Okoye, Lola Omotayo pick wedding date

image

Barely few months after he proposed to his baby mama, Lola Omotayo, Peter Okoye, one of the singing sensational duo of Psquare  has taken a step further by picking a date for their traditional marriage.
A source close to the couple disclosed that their traditional marriage is billed to hold on Sunday, November 17, at Arc Events Center in Lagos island. The date for the white wedding  is yet to be fixed.

Nigeria @ 53: Stella Damasus lambasts sycophants

image

Stella Damasus

Nollywood diva, Stella Damasus has shown that apart from acting, she is also a good social crusader.  Following the celebration of the nation’s 53rd independence anniversary last Tuesday, the actress descended heavily on sycophants and boot-lickers  who are giving false impression that all is well with the country after 53 years of achieving self rule.
Reacting to series of ‘deceiving comments’ that preceded the independence anniversary, the actress bemoaned the deteriorating state of things in the country.
Writing on her facebook page, Damasus said “I have been reading different versions of congratulatory messages to celebrate Nigeria. Even from people who a few days ago wrote negative and derogatory things about our dear country.
These same folks have been pissed off about the ASUU  strike, the almost six hundred people who came into America as entourage with the presidency for the United Nations conference and how much was spent, the unresolved Boko Haram issue, the underage marriage and the deliberate silence from the senate and so many other things they are unhappy about.
But as the hypocrites we all are, we find the need to go on social media just to be seen as relevant. We start to use different apps to create beautiful pictures of Nigeria including our pictures to say happy independence. If it ended there I will not mind because we cannot change the event nor the date.
But when some people who want to sound intelligent start to say things like Nigeria is the most industrious, courageous and safest country, Nigeria is an example to the whole world because we are the giants and so many other things I personally consider to be eye service, it baffles me.”
“Instead of sitting and lying about the country you claim you love, why don’t you say happy independence and then go ahead to proffer solutions that you believe will help the country to be the place we all believe it can and should be, the place our parents described to us, the place blessed with so much that other countries will do anything to be like us.”

The National Assembly will give Nollywood needed legislative backing – Ndoma-Egba

image

Ndoma Egba

The Senate Majority Leader, Sen. Victor Ndoma  says the National Assembly will give the Nigerian film industry,  `Nollywood’, all the legislative assistance it needs to thrive.Ndoma-Egba made the assertion on Thursday in Abuja when members of Nollywood paid him a courtesy visit at the National Assembly.
He said: “I want to assure you that I, and I believe the National Assembly, will give you all the necessary legislative intervention.’’The Senate Leader noted that in spite of the industry’s tremendous contributions to the nation, it had remained stagnant in the last 20 years.
According to him, we must strengthen our copy right laws to ensure that creativity translates to economic benefits.
“In spite of the contributions of the industry, not just to the  National economy but even to the psyche of the outside world, it is still informal, totally unregulated, not structured, and with no legal framework.
“The film industry is still operating on archaic laws and I think this visit has alerted us that the time has come for us to structure the industry properly,” he said.Ndoma-Egba said that the time was ripe to revisit the Copyright Act as well as all the bilateral and multilateral instruments and protocols that have to do with copyrights. Earlier, the President, and Directors Film Guild of Nigeria, Andy Amenechi, noted that there were several bills pending before the National Assembly, which when passed would affect the industry positively. “We have the Motion Picture Council of Nigeria Bill (MOPICON) as well as the Cyber Crime Security Bill.
A lot of people think this Cyber Crime Security Bill has to do only with security, but it has to do with online piracy as well.“So it is important that this bill is passed as quickly as possible because it will ensure the protection and safety of our movies online, because currently we suffer a lot of piracy online,”
Amenechi condemned the situation whereby stakeholders in the industry were often sidelined during public hearings held to discuss the future of the industry.
According to him, practitioners in the industry need to be properly represented at such hearings so as to state the challenges being encountered. He noted that due to the lack of proper organisation in the industry, funds appropriated to it often ended in wrong hands, which was responsible for the continuous stagnation. The film maker said that there was a need to have a public hearing on the film industry in Nigeria in order to identify the causes for its stagnation and proffer solutions.
Also, Chairman, Coalition of Nollywood Guilds and Associations, Bond Emeruwa, said: “For 20 to 25 years it is very unfortunate that the industry still runs on the 1992 film policy, a film policy that predates Nollywood.“If we still run a policy that predates Nollywood that means that there is no provision for the growth of this industry.”
Other members of the delegation included Fred Amata, Madu Chikwendu, Fidelis Duker and Lancelot Imasuen.

Sexiest In Nollywood: Uche Jombo, Pat Attah go out

image

Sexiest Men In Nollywood

Season 3 of the quest for the Sexiest Man and Woman in Nollywood is coasting home gradually after months of rigorous search, voting, twists and turns in the unfolding tale.We began with 25 men and 25 women and now we are down to the last 13 women and 12 men, which means on a particular week only a woman may have to go out.
This arose from from mathematical contraption as a result of close ties which saw two women advancing at the expense of one man.
Now the figure in the house: 13 women, 12 men came about after Uche Jombo and Pat Attah failed to make the bill. Both had it long coming after successive weeks of poor run in the quest.
Tonto Dikeh and Yul Edochie remain top of their respective leagues with some measure of smugness even though Tonto is repeatedly having her door being knocked by second-place Stephanie Okereke.
But the biggest twist of the week is Benson Okonkwo and Pope Odonwondo bundling into 3rd and 4th places respectively, shoving Frank Artus to the 5th place.
The duo have been playing a ding-dong of hot chase for a while now and it came as no surprise to Artus.
Yet if care is not taken Frank Artus woes may just continue as Uti Nwachukwu is beginning to bear dividends. Uti moved up several places to sit in 6th. If his tempo is maintained the guy has got some steam on his wings to stun anybody.
Rita Dominic, Nadia Buari, Biodun Okeowo and Jackie Appiah have been in a trance of sort, neither moving forward nor backward. But as we have come to know in this quest; anything can happen. So, who goes next and who makes the final 10 men and women. Your guess is as good as mine and only as certain as your votes.

He is one ambassador our brand is very proud to have on our brand. Forbes is a great name that you can not fault them in such matters but I’m surprised that he’s not higher on the list. I expected him to be in the top three, maybe Forbes and Channels O based it on the values of their endorsements and not their personal wealth. Genevieve Nnaji’s alleged female lover finally debunks accusation

image

Genevive Nnaji

Sometimes ago, Nollywood diva, Genevieve Nnaji was reported to be allegedly involved in an affair with Benin Republic actress, Ella Martins. Well, Ella has finally stepped out to debunk the story, saying Genevieve and herself are just good friends and not lesbians as people think.
Here’s how she put it:
“Genevieve is a very good friend of mine, we met way back in 2004 and we have been good friends since then. The story that we are lovers must have come from another female friend of hers. I am saying this because since 2004, there have been no such lesbian stories but suddenly it sprung up.
Towards the end of last year, I came to Nigeria and I stayed with Genevieve. Although we stayed under the same roof, we slept in different rooms. There was a time during my visit that we both went to see a friend in a hotel in Lekki and people saw us going in. We later went clubbing that night with the friend and which I think is a normal thing for girls to club if they want to. But that was when the rumours got worse, that we went into the hotel to sleep with each other!!!”
According to her, that wasn’t the first time the press would call her a lesbian but, she’s learnt not to respond and bother about such nasty stories about her.
“Genevieve and I have known each other since 2004 and she really is a nice person if you get to know her. We talk on phone a lot and we discuss life’s issues like normal girls do, she is a wonderful person. I guess it’s because she is a famous person that some undesirable elements want to tarnish her image and mine too. The Press make things worse too. There was a time I performed with Tony Tetuila and there were rumours after then that we were dating. But I just want to emphasize here that Genevieve and I are not in any form of sexual relationship, we are just good friends.”

Denrele denies gay photo shoot with Charley Boy

image

Charlie Boy and Denrele

After it went viral for close to two years, popular Channel O VJ Denrele Edun has emerged to deny locked-lips photos of himself and Charles Oputa saying it is the handiwork of mischief makers. He made this revelation on Sunday, during Channels TV Rubbin Minds where he was a guest. According to Denrele, he never knew where those pictures emanated from and couldn’t have indulged in such a shameful act. And when asked why it took him so long to come out with the truth he said, he didn’t want to waste  time responding to untrue allegations as he believes he was obviously doing great on his job hence, the reason for the negative gossips.
It would be recalled that recently in an interview with The Punch, Denrele’s father also debunked gossips that his son could be gay. According to him, Denrele was brought up in the fear of God and believes his son couldn’t have done all the negatives he was accused of. Denrele’s father referred to his son as “a responsible son”

The Interview comes weeks after information surfaced online that the actress was suffering from acute depression and had allegedly attempted suicide. Tonto has had a fairly rough year starting from the release of her singles ‘High’ and ‘It’s Ova’ in March this year. The singles met negative reviews from the public and had spiraled into a war between Tonto and her followers on social networking site Twitter. Her critics had also re-appeared after she fell on Iyanya’s stage in London but she says in this video, she’ll continue to be strong.

image

Film Makers and allied professionals who converged on the Tudor Room of the Fairmont Royal York Hotel, Toronto have challenged African leaders to see film as the biggest medium to export the cultures and the rich history of the continent to the rest of the world by evolving policies that will support the industry.
The Africa Cinema Business Roundtable organized by the Africa Film Academy, organisers of the Africa Movie Academy Awards during the 34th Toronto International Film Festival had Mr. Dayo Ogunyemi, Managing Director of 234Media, a Kenya-based company as the Keynote Speaker where he spoke on Policy, Funding, Distribution and Sustainability.
The highly interactive session which lasted for more than three hours generated much passion and debate among the participants mainly filmmakers and journalists from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Canada, Senegal, United States, Congo DRC and Nigeria.
In his presentation, Ogunyemi noted that governments in Africa should support the industry through enabling laws and regulations that gives tax incentives and lower the cost of making films adding that cinema is vital to the growth and development of film in terms of profitability and sustainability for filmmakers.
He stressed that for film to have wider distribution and gross more revenues Africa needs more than 10,000 screens and the number of available screens in theatre across the continent is a far cry.
In her closing remarks, AMAA CEO, Peace Anyiam-Osigwe enjoined participants to collaborate as filmmakers from Africa and Diaspora and engage with political leaders and policy makers to develop policy options that will make the business of filmmaking profitable and sustainable.

Can Rita Dominic make history again?

image

The stage is set again, and the topic currently dominating discourse in most quarters in the industry is the possibility of Rita Dominic writing her name in gold as the best actress in Africa.Rita  who won last year’s Best Actress award at AMAA for her role in a Kenyan film ‘Shattered’ got nominated again for her role in her movie, ‘The Meeting.” She was pitched against Yvonne Okoro  also nominated for role in The Contract’’, Florence Masebe (Elelwani), Mariam Ouedraogo(Moi Zaphira), Mbutung Seikeh(Ninah’s Diary) and Malawian Flora Suya who was nominated for her role in Shem Joya’s ‘Last Fishing Boat.’RitaWinning the Best Actress award for the second time, in the forthcoming grand finale of AMAA, scheduled to hold  in Bayelsa State, on April 25, 2013, will surely go a long way to boost the status of  Rita as the best Africa actress in the continent. From time immemorial, Rita  has proved to be on top of her game, and the chance of her clinching the prestigious prize for the second time is not in  doubt  Looking back, the gap-toothed actress broke record last year when she won the Actress Of The Year Award in Kenya, at the expense of two Kenyans; Patricia Kihoro and Joan Amara, for her role in Shattered. She also won the best actress in a leading role at the 2012 AMAA awards for her role in the same movie ‘Shattered’ and FAB awards’ most stylish actress of the year. While  Ghana’s Yvonne Okoro may pose a threat to her winning the awards, Rita’s indisputable acting skills undoubtedly gives her an edge over other nominees. In addition to this, her film, “The Meeting” which got six nominations brightens her chances of clinching the coveted prize. But who knows, the battle is not always open for the strong to win.Like her male colleague, OC Ukeje, who emerged the Best Actor on the continent recently at  AMVCA, and got nominated for AMAA 2013 Prize For Best Actor In A Leading Role for his role in the movie, “Alan Poza,” Rita is set for greatness.

Waje speaks on ‘Nude picture’

image

Following the controversy surrounding the release of her ‘half-nude picture’ online, Waje has explained that the said picture was not only an abstract, but also, part of her new video concept. She offered this explanation when Showtime contacted her   on her new video.According to her, the picture is a scene in her new single titled I Wish, released during the week.*Waje“After being on set of the movie, Tunnel, I realized that our music videos are like movies painting the right picture and acting it. I Wish video is a lifeless theme and the song is a vulnerable song, and I tried to interprete it in that abstract nude picture with the broken mirrors. It’s me trying to interprete a woman’s vulnerability, xx ” she said.Waje’s publicist, Ifeoma however refuted the rumour making the rounds that the singer went nude in the video, adding  “It was all graphics.”According to her, Waje was putting on clothes in the video as shot by Clarence Peters.  “Waje didn’t go nude in that video. She was putting on her clothes with some jewelries.  The trick was all Clarence Peters’ work who made her look as if she was naked. You would notice that the picture was dark and blur with just her face being the most visible,” she said.

Step Up, Big Brother Wants You!

image

The eighth edition of Africa’s biggest reality series Big Brother Africa kicks off in May and already fans of arguably the most successful television franchise ever seen on the continent are asking…who will the new housemates be?

Who will find their name and their faces gracing newspapers, their profiles loaded to websites and blogs?

Who will become the subject of drive time radio and just who will find themselves heating up the Twitter-sphere?

At this time there is no way to know this but if you meet the entry requirements and enter between now and Valentine’s Day on Thursday 14 February, you may well be among the superstars in waiting and may find yourself flirting with fame and fortune!

This year, entry is open to the same 14 countries as the year before with the only exception being Liberia which will be replaced by Ethiopia. The replacement comes as AfricaMagic and series producers Endemol SA rotate certain countries into and out of the format. The reason for this is to ensure that a wide range of countries can be included in different editions of the series.

As a result of the change, participating countries this year are: Angola, Botswana, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Entry is open to all persons over the age of 21, who are citizens of one of the participating countries and who either have a valid passport or will be able to obtain one by the end of March. Producers are looking for persons who are fluent in English, entertaining and passionate about the Big Brother experience. Of particular importance to the selection team are the qualities of tolerance, determination and enthusiasm. If you are open-minded, bold and adventurous, that’s even better!

Entry forms are available immediately at http://www.africamagic.tv/bigbrother so visit the website and complete the online submission form. Printed entry forms will also be available at MultiChoice offices in the participating countries from February 1, 2013.

As with previous editions of Big Brother Africa, the new season will have a twist…and according to M-Net Africa Managing Director Biola Alabi, who has helmed the production for the past four years, the big surprise this year is one that audiences are expected to fall in love with.

“As always, we won’t say much about the new season but I can confirm that we’ve added a new element that I think will get the hearts of viewers racing. The fact that the fans truly adore the show is all the motivation we need to keep it fresh and fun!”

Her views are echoed by Endemol MD Sivan Pillay who says, “Our long-term association with M-Net is very much a partnership, a marriage of sorts. We understand what they desire for their audiences, and they trust us enough to let us develop innovative twists and surprises. So the process is quite harmonious and very exciting, as all good relationships should be. I am hopeful that this year we are creating a red-hot show that will include familiar trademarks like nominations and evictions alongside a very special new development.”

Previous editions of Big Brother Africa have boasted huge cash prizes for winners and this year the winner will walk away with USD 300 000.

More information on Big Brother Africa 8 will be made available over the next month, so stay tuned to AfricaMagic, follow the action on Twitter and Facebook and keep checking the website. I’m not dropping any album this year – Sasha

image

Fans of Storm records first lady, and fashion entrepreneur, Sasha  who are looking forward to her album release this year, may be  disappointed as the songstress has declared that she is not working on any album at the moment.

Though, she said her next album will be nothing short of a body of work.

Sasha disclosed this, while speaking during an interview with newsmen in Lagos.

According to her, she believes in giving fans value for their money. “If anything must be done, it must be done very well,”she said.

Sasha, who dropped some new songs before Christmas took time to talk about her foray into  fashion. She said, she has been in fashion business since she started pursuing her career in music. Ï see myself as a creative director than a fashion designer.”

Sasha P is Nigeria’s Number one female MC  whose consistency  has distinguished her among her contemporaries.

Waje debuts in Nollywood

Popular female singer, Waje has joined the league of musicians who are making a career in acting. She was recently spotted while shooting a new movie in Lagos. The award winning songbird has landed a major role in an upcoming movie.

Directed by Stanley Ohikhuare, the movie also stars the likes of Femi Jacobs, Patrick Doyle, Nse Nile and many others.

According to our source, the yet to be titled movie tells the story of a young pastor and his wife who battle to save their daughter’s life and their troubled marriage.

Waje who has always professed her love for acting, joined the industry after featuring in stage plays most notably ‘Olorunbi’ in 2010.  She is also adding finishing touches to her album which is due to be  out in March.

I am not hunted by police – Iyanya

Iyanya has denied reports that police officers were looking for him, muttering on phone “Don’t mind them, I am in Abuja.”

Reigning Afro hip hop act, Iyanya is allegedly wanted by the Nigerian Police, in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, in connection with the case of fraud brought against him by popular show organiser,  Opa Williams.

Already, Iyanya’s manager, Ubi-Franklin Ekpong is said to be currently under arrest at Mile 3 Police Division,in the Garden city.

Opa Williams, the producer of Nigeria’s foremost comedy show, ‘Nite of a Thousand Laughs’ reported Iyanya to the police for allegedly collecting N1.7 million from him being payment for the singer’s  performance at  ‘Nite of a Thousand Laughs’ shows which held in Benin  and Port Harcourt  few days ago. Unfortunately, the Kukere crooner never showed up at any  of the shows.

According to our sources, what infuriated Williams was the fact that Iyanya actually arrived Port Harcourt ahead of the show on that fateful day(Monday)only for him to disappear minutes later with his cell phones permanently switched off.

“He has caused me a lot of embarrassment, as people who paid to come and watch him went home disappointed. For 17 years, we have been organizing Nite of A Thousand Laughs and we have built a large followership, I will not allow anybody to destroy the credibility we have as people who deliver on their promises. That’ why we are going to pursue this case (legally) to a logical conclusion and ensure this is the last time Iyanya would do this to anybody.” Williams stated.

Adding, he said ,“When Iyanya failed to show up at Benin edition, which held on December 26, he called to apologise,  promising however to make it up with the Port-Harcourt and Bonny shows. But again, he did not keep to his word.”

Showtime gathered  that Iyanya shunned Opa Williams’ event, but performed earlier at another  show  which held the same day in Port-Harcourt and featured Timaya.

Confirming the buzz, Williams’ media Company, Media Image Managers, said, “We are aware of the issue between Opa Williams and hip hop act, Iyanya. The parties are at the moment at Mile 3 Police Division in Port Harcourt. Our client has informed us he is seeking redress in court. However, there are moves to resolve the matter amicably. It is sad that Iyanya would behave in such an unprofessional manner, but then, the police are handling the matter well.”

Mercy Johnson features in Ice Prince’s ‘Aboki’ remix

You will be termed a ‘hater’ if not stoned by fans for daring to doubt Mercy Johnson’s excellent role interpreting abilities but the same may not be the case when you put it to them (fans) that she’s about to sing!

No?… Yes! And it’s a pretty picture. Rap star, Ice Prince on social networking site twitter announced that the sultry actress will be part of a star studded list of artists to remix his currently raving hit song ‘Aboki’

He tweeted:
@Iceprincezamani: Aboki Remix!!! Zamani(Nig) Khuli Chana(SA), Mercy Johnson(Nig), Wiz Kid(Nig), MI(Nig), Sarkodie(Ghana)!! Instagr.am/p/Ug/XAxAQkr/

You will recall that in October last year, another nollywood actress, Tonto Dike dropped her singles ‘Hi’ and ‘Itz Ova’ to wide condemnation that degenerated to a virtual war on twitter; Tonto and her fans hurled insults at each other. It is hoped this never happens in this case.

Already we hear that recording is well underway and the remix should be hitting fans of both Ice Prince and Mercy soon. Mercy Johnson gave birth to a baby girl in faraway United States, late December last year. Her new role as ‘singer’ now  comes fourth after taking on as ‘actress’, ‘wife’ and ‘mother’.

Do you think it’s wise of her to venture into singing?

Our expectations in 2013 by Nollywood practitioners

Like the previous years, the out-going year, 2012 is a year of the good, the bad and the ugly in Nollywood. A year full of intrigues, heartbreaks and tears, some practitioners got married, sealed endorsement deals, won awards, premiered hit movies  and welcomed new babies  among other good things. But above all, the industry lost some of its veteran actors to the cold hands of death.

At the maiden edition of Monalisa Chinda’s “A Dance for Life” dance-drama project staged at the Oriental hotel, Lekki, Lagos, during the week, HVP spoke to some top Nollywood practitioners on how the industry fared in 2012  and their expectations in the coming year. This is what they have to say…

Zeb Ejiro, Director/producer

Nollywood in 2012 was very wonderful. Though there was the good , the bad and of course, the ugly side of the year. A lot of good things happened to the industry this year; new great movies hit the cinemas and the industry made a lot of gains. But the bad side is that the industry is still in comatose, it is yet to get to where it’s supposed to be. For the ugly side, we lost many veteran actors this year; Enebeli Elebuwa, Peter Eneh…

The coming year will be the best year ever for the industry because a lot of things have been put in place by the practitioners. I believe that those things will help to take the industry to the next level.

Charles Novia, producer/director

I think, it’s a wonderful year for the industry. We have some great movies that were box office hits. Academically, I wrote a book this year, on Nollywood, the first of its kind. Also, in the area of event organisation, practitioners are beginning to realise that they too can be part of it. We saw the Monalisa Chinda’s Dance for Life project, Fred Amata’s Christmas dance drama production and Chico Ejiro’s Nollywood party. It’s an exciting year and I hope that we can maintain this tempo in the coming year.

Lancelot Imasuen, Director/producer:

The outgoing year saw the practitioners veered into other areas of art. This development further stretched my imagination. The stage remains the father of all entertainment, and Nollywood seems to limit what the practitioners can do on stage. I’m so happy that this kind of ideas are going to further boost our morale first and foremost as artistes, and secondly, as entrepreneurs.

Chico Ejiro, producer

The outgoing year has been rewarding for the industry in terms of investment and production. A lot of great movies hit the cinemas this year. I want to see the industry move forward in 2013.  There are so many big-budget projects in the offing. The industry will take a new shape in the coming year.

Fidelis Duker, Director/producer

It was an eventful year. And it witnessed what I would call beautiful ending. The number of films churned out from Nollywood may have dropped, but the industry witnessed more activities this year. Apart from film making, I think, the practitioners have realised that there are other genres they can delved into.

Today, some practitioners are columnists in some major newspapers and  soft-sell magazines.  The coming year holds a lot of promises for  the industry. Looking at the previous years, the practitioners were almost doing the same thing in terms of scripting, directing and producing, but today all that have changed. They are beginning to branch into other areas of art which is a good development.

In all, it was an eventful and  a sad year. Even though, we did not access the much talked about N200 million government intervention fund for entertainment, the year was harvests of accomplishments.

I was crushed after I lost MTN Project fame

Tolulope Abraham Adesina is a singer, producer, songwriter and  lover of the arts who originates from Ogbomosho in Oyo state. He  grew up and lived in Kaduna but is presently  based in Lagos . In this  chat with Sidekick Media Inc,  Tolu speaks  about his music and his plans.

Background

My names are Tolulope Abraham Adesina  and I was MTN Project Fame ex-contestant in 2010 . I was on the same set with Chidinma .I was born and raised in Kaduna until 2010 when I came to Lagos for the MTN Project Fame. I’ve been singing since I was 11 and my first background in music was in Baptist Church children ‘s choir where I was taught  how to sing and perform and by the time I was 16years, I had my first major performance at a grand opening at House on the Rock Jam Mega Festival in Abuja . That is at the stadium where I sang the national anthem and everybody was like  blown away because of my girlish voice  and since then, it’s been a wonderful journey .

Also I’d  been to about seven other competitions before MTN Project Fame.  I was at Nokia First Chance; West African Idol and so many of them and singing  to veterans like Donnie Mclurkin, Kim Burrel at B.E.T auditions” but finally, Project Fame saw  talent in me and I went as far as I did .

Growing up

Well, growing up in Kaduna was really nice for me because Kaduna  then used to be a very peaceful and loving society.  There were no religious crises and for me , it was a wonderful experience because I had loving  parents who supported me when they recognized the talent in me. Also, I grew up among  five siblings . I was  the first and there was only one girl amongst  us .So it was fun growing up .

My starting point

Well it started  with love and passion for  music . I grew up loving and falling in love  with music because as a young boy, there was nowhere I heard music that  it wouldn’t catch my attention  and my Dad had a very huge music  library. It was as big  as a record store. He always played music and sometimes when I closed from school, I’d go there to listen to music  after my assignment, to an extent that I’d even forget to remove my uniform (laugh).

So I always played music  from the time  I returned  from school  till when was set to do my assignment. So for me , music started way back before anybody knew me. And then in 2010, people got to feel who Tolu is , they got to know who Tolu is and so far its been a wonderful journey .

Life after MTN Project Fame

Yes , I released  a song  after Project Fame called “Arewa’’ and it’s a beautiful song , a song about Nigeria’s beauty. Arewa in English means beautiful woman  .When I dropped the song, people loved it because of the sincerity in the word and the technicality of the music .

It was RnB and then, there was a lot of Yoruba in it.  People  loved it because it was indigenous and  international. Later, I dropped a video for it  and it was played in couples of stations like Soundcity , On TV, AIT,  to mention a few . I’ve also dropped lots of single like ‘’Wine it ‘’ and presently, I’m doing  a new song which are three singles in one

My kind of Music

I will say Tolu’s strength in music is RnB and soul .But Tolu has grown since 2010 and I’m doing a lot of music like Afro pop , Pop and RnB . So, I do all kinds of things that appeal to different kinds of people and this makes me to be three in one .So generally. I do three different songs that go three different directions .

Experience from MTN Project Fame

It  was a lucrative experience . I learnt a lot of things about music . I learnt that to go beyond your talent,  you need to have a stage act ,  manage your stage well  and appeal to people when you are singing so they can feel your music other than just listening to your voice . Also, we had vocal training on how to improve  in our vocal strength and even all of  those  trainings are helping me because even now, I have a vocal studio myself and I’ve learnt how to manipulate and use my voice for the best .

Not winning the contest

I was crushed (laugh). I was very bitter about it and it  took me a while to recover from it because I spent three months in that house and everybody knew I was that good .A lot of people have different theory about what happened to me . Some people said I lost my passion  but I gave  my best show and I tried to be the best I could be at every given point  in time . I could remember that there was a week in the house that I lost my voice and my performance during that week wasn’t good and when I recovered from it, I gave my best . All the same, I’m happy for the winner because she ‘s doing so well . Chidinma is doing well and I’m proud of her because she’s growing and changing .But I’m also doing my own thing in my own corner (laugh ).

Compensation as one of the finalists

Yes , we were given some  thank you packages and a little cash to say keep on coming .

Present occupation

Tolu is three  things  presently: I’m a  producer, song writer and performer ;so these three things are what I find pleasure in .I produce artists to help them actualize their dreams and recently, I did something for Scales which  is  coming out in his new album ‘’Adaba’’. So, producing is a kind of  introducing the other side of Tolu to the world .

My three works

Why it’s easy is because they are right under the same umbrella , they are all around music . All of them complement each other .So, sometimes people come to me and say I like your song ,who produced it and I’d say I did and they will want me to produce for them. Some would say, I like your voice, I want to sing like you and I trained their vocal cords .

My hero in the industry

In Nigeria I look up to two people ;Asa and 2Face. I  believe in their style of music. They have a message because each time I listen to 2Face, no matter what he’s singing about, there’s always something to learn from it. His music is poetic .And Asa is also soulful , lyrical and she was the first female artiste to make us proud in the music industry .

Internationally ,my biggest mentor is Brandy and if you listen to my song, there’s a lot of Brandy’s influence in it .

My future in the industry

I wish to be a name that when you said Tolu internationally and nationally, people will know who you are talking about.

Challenges as an up coming act

There are  musical challenges for anyone because it goes beyond the talent which is to promote your songs, get it out there and people have to hear it  and all that cost money .

So as an up coming act,  it can be a little frustrating to get your good work out to the public for people to hear .But I thank God for my management Vintage Record and also my manager Rukky for their support

Advice for upcoming acts

Believe in yourself ,you cannot give up on yourself .And the last person to give up on you is you .

Even if everybody thought  you can’t do it keep doing it and one day people will hear you.

“People Mistake My Confidence For Arrogance” – Lami

MOST people may not know who Lami is, and that’s because she is into soul-music which is relatively unpopular in this part of the world. But when it comes to her brand, Lami is one of a kind. Aside being a singer, she’s also a song writer and a UN Ambassador. She was recently made an Oxfarm Ambassador alongside Tuface and Sound Sultan. In this encounter, she opens up on a number of issues ranging from her career, sojourn abroad, marriage among others. Except:

How did you get into music?

I started singing at a tender age. Then, people told me I sing with passion. With time, I started taking it seriously. I thought it wasn’t easy actualising my dream in Nigeria because the environment wasn’t encouraging. However, while  in London, a lot of people  encouraged me  and here I am today.

Soul music isn’t widely accepted in Nigeria. Why did you choose to tread that narrow path?

Music sometimes is like food. There are some food like ice cream that everybody likes. Then you have peculiar dishes that are loved by few people. And I’m that kind of person. I know my kind of music isn’t for everybody. That’s what my gift is, and that’s what comes naturally to me. I always say to people that you can’t give  what you don’t have. I would be a hypocrite if I mount the stage and start to do dance hall.

So how has Soul music been fairing in Nigeria?

When I first stormed the country, everybody said it isn’t going to work but I’m a bit stubborn. And I believe in myself.Though initially, it was a challenge breaking into the Nigerian music industry. But now, people are reckoning with my music. It’s not every event that people want pop and dance hall. Sometimes, people prefer to listen to Soul music  at their weddings, inaugurations and other classy events. So, I’m enjoying myself. I love what I do and I have no regret whatsoever.

Does it pay your bills?

I would be making no profit if I try to be everybody else because it’s better to be a big fish in a small pond than a small fish in a mighty ocean.

Are you not worried that Soul acts like you are not celebrated in Nigeria?

We are all human beings and it does disturb once in a while. I’ve been in the industry for the past ten years now and I’m where I am today. I don’t take my eyes off the fact that God has been so nice to me. There are people who have been striving for years doing pop, dance hall and they are nowhere today.

Also, people like J.Zee, it took a long time for him to get a Grammy award. What makes an artiste is the quality of his or her music and knowing that you have your own fans who understand what you are doing. If they eventually recognize me, fine, and if they don’t, it’s okay.

How did you come about the UN job?

The UN position happened in a very interesting events and God was definitely involved. I had an interview with a BBC correspondent, and while we were in the middle of the interview I said a lot of things about Nigeria which impressed him. At the end of the interview session, he told me that UN officials were looking for a representative envoy in West Africa.

So, he asked if I would be interested in the job, and I answered in the affirmative. Later, I was invited first to Uganda and then Turkey. While in Turkey, we had a performance for dignitaries and it was really nice. That was when  they picked me up and since then, it’s been a learning experience for me.

Before I became Lami in Nigeria, traveling has been my hobby. My family travel a lot and the UN job further exposed me to African countries. I am planning tour  for Eastabab, a country ravaged by famine, and some other African countries with Sound Sultan and Tuface in 2013.

How did you feel when you get to places like Uganda and other war-torn countries?

Actually, I couldn’t make it to Uganda but my experience in Turkey was very interesting.  I have my reservation whenever  I visit countries with terrible experiences. They’ provide security  and make us feel at home. It’s separate from music but it’s still part of it because sometimes, I perform at certain UN events. So, they are all blending.

What about Oxfarm?

I went for a conference with the UN in Adis Ababa. And while we were there, we were talking about the famine situation in Africa and what we thought we could do, and Oxfarm basically is handling that project in Africa. They  asked me, Tuface and Sound Sultan to help them and we agreed.

So we did that and people loved the song. We went to places like Brazil, Tanzania and other places and they loved it. they decided to even do a remix which we are working on. So, they wanted to make it official for us to be their ambassadors and that’s like a big deal because Oxfarm is as big as UN. So that was how I got the job.

You just released an album?

Not really. I’m relatively new in Nigeria. But I’m working on my sophomore album, Pieces Of Love. The process takes a lot of time and I’m doing a lot of things at the same time. I spend a lot of time trying to get the right production and I’m hoping it’ll be a lovely experience.

You just dropped another single, But You.

Yes. The first one was Ori Mi Wu featuring Ice Prince. The second one was Titi Lailai and But You- all  produced by MOBO nominee, Femi Tones who has worked with Emmy Winehouse, George Benson and other big artistes. I enjoy his process because he’s a good guitarist. But I’m also talking with one or two persons here to work with. It’s not going to be more than thirteen tracks.

Coming out when?

By God’s grace, in April, next year.

What is it about you that people don’t know?

People don’t know that I’m very silly and as much as my music is deep, the other side of me is very simple and easy going. I love watching cartoons, I like eating a lot and spending time with my family.  It’s simple things that make me happy.

Does being married contribute to you not always seen at social events?

No. My husband is an outgoing guy, very easy-going and supportive. He’s my best friend. So, he’s not one of those insecure over-protective guys. I think, Nigeria doesn’t just support a woman who is seen outside all the time like men. We are stereotyped here and I don’t want to get entangled. It’s easier to keep to myself.

How did you meet your husband?

I won’t tell you, butI’m happily married.

It’s obvious you both met abroad?

Yes, I can confirm that.

So how do you combine marriage and work?

I see my music like a job. If I was working at a bank, I would have to combine it with my marriage.  So, I give myself hours to do certain things. I have priorities- God comes first and then my family, everything else is an embellishment.

So, if certain things don’t get into my priorities, it means they aren’t important. I believe there’s a time for everything because my voice isn’t going anywhere by God’s grace and God will be kind-I’ll be able to do what I would do. I’m lucky because my husband is just superb. He helps me, he’s the first person to encourage me to join a choir.

You are a chorister?

I was in London. He was the one who noticed my voice.

What actually happened back in London?

I was in England as a teenager and did my first degree and Master degree there. It was nice learning experience. I had the benefit of being part of a church family. I was protected from a lot of nonsense. And I think that was a very good foundation for me to do so many things and still be strong.

What happened after school?

I also did my second Master degree there. I have a B.A in Business Administration, M.A Honours in Change Management and an Executive M.B.A from Pensil University.

Why didn’t you pick up a job?

I actually worked for a while but music was always there. Your gift and skills are two different things. I didn’t have to go to school to learn how to sing but I had to go to school to become a professional. Going through the learning process was good for me and I’m happy my dad made me complete my university education because it makes me more confident as a woman.

Do you mean you would have toed the line of a drop out if not for your dad?

I think it was when I did my second master degree that I became restless. I’m just blessed because God loves me so much. There’s time for everything. I love my life and the decisions I’ve made. I have no regrets and my family hasn’t stopped me from following my desires but when it comes to education, if you have someone who is going to support you, get a hold of that because it’s like a priced possession. No matter who you are-look at this Basket- baller, Shekiel,he went back to school after he was done with playing basketball. So, there’s a discipline in going to school and I’m glad, my family supported me.

Can we say he discovered you?

I think he played a very vital role in making sure I took my music seriously. But who I am a product of joint efforts by my sisters, friends and strangers. There was a time I sang at the London Arena and an old woman  held my hand and said to me “make sure you do something with your voice.”

I’ve so many moments like that. Even when I was in school, my music teacher once told said “Lami I’m so sure I’m going to see you on MTV sometime,” but I joked about it. It happened. I guess a lot of people saw what I didn’t see

You left London for Nigeria…

From London, I went to America and then came back to Nigeria.

I’m sure you got married to your husband there?

That’s not fair. I just want to ask a question

By the time I came back to Nigeria I was already married.

Why did you decide with your husband to return home?

Nigeria is home. There were times I wanted to go back but luckily, there’s an open door. Then, I realized that there’s a part of me that got tired of people saying Nigeria isn’t working. So, I decided to say it’s not good for all of us to say Nigeria isn’t good and we’re all leaving.

I had an incline in my spirit to come back home to do the little I could. I don’t want to be known as an American-African artiste. I want to be known as a Nigerian artiste and it’s not easy but Nigeria is home, my family is here and I think, I can make a difference. As crazy as the system is, a part of me understands it. We have a long way to go. And it’s very sad that we started the year with fuel scarcity and ended it with fuel scarcity.

So you dragged your husband back to Nigeria?

No, we agree on everything that has to do with us. I wanted to at first then later, he said yes. Now, if I said I wanted to leave, he’ll say no. so he’s my friend, we talk through things- we didn’t rush.

How long did it take you to get used to Nigeria?

It didn’t take long because I’ve moved around a lot. I travel a lot and I’m not among those afraid of change. Life is too short to be in one place and see things one way for the rest of your life.

What did you miss about London and America?

When I relocated to Nigeria, one of the things I missed was Star Box and I love to eat a lot. I always visit a certain restaurant where they sell foreign dishes to eat. As long as there’s good food, it’s okay.

You appear friendly and loving, yet  your critics say you are a snob?

I think I’m just me. If I meet someone and he or she is easy-going, I’ll just get along with that person.  I don’t have a chip off my shoulder. But at the same time, you have to respect yourself. People mistake my confidence for arrogance. I’m not arrogant.

We are all going to die one day and we aren’t taking  anything with us. But I’m a confident person and won’t let you talk down at me because I’m a woman. And I like people who are humble yet confident and Sultan, eLDEE, Jimmy Jattz are confident and quiet. I think people just think that when one is confident then, she’s proud.

Are you also contemplating of going into acting someday?

There are times when I feel like I would love to act but they would really have to do a lot of work on me. I did some acting while I was younger, nothing professional but if the opportunity presents itself,, I might give it a trial.

Have you ever been broke?

No. God has been very faithful. My mum also taught me how  to save. Although, there were times I                                        don’t have as much as I wanted because of the expenses I was incurring. I try not to be vulnerable.

Many men find it hard to marry female entertainers?

I think everything depends on the couple. If you know who you are; it takes a very insecure man to stop a woman from exploring her gifts. There are different stereotypes but I didn’t grow up here neither did my husband. So, you can say whatever you like, when I die, I’m not going to be answerable  to any human being but my God. That’s where my primary concern is and my husband too.

I think Nigeria is empowering women-it’s a stereotype issue. If a woman marries a male artiste, she’ll go through the same thing because there will always be women around him. I think we get caught up in things that don’t matter, those things don’t matter. A female banker would always have male admirers so it’s everywhere. What matters is the quality of your marriage and character.

So how do you ward off men?

I don’t even have time for all that.

What won’t you be caught doing?

I’m really bad at dancing so, I won’t be caught at choreographed dancing.

Untold story of Rhythm Unplugged 2012

Those who were privileged to attend this year’s edition of the annual Rhythm Unplugged, will not forget in a hurry the thrilling experience that preceded the event.

The show, apart from recording an impressive turn-out of music lovers, it paraded the best of Nigerian music acts. From dusk to dawn, thousands of ecstatic fun lovers stretched through hours of brilliant music and stage choreography performances.

This year, the event was a huge success and organisers.  Flytime promotion ensured they gave the audience who arrived as early as 6 pm at the Expo hall of  Eko hotel and Suites venue of the event, a value for their money. The rush for  tickets by fans  heightened the spirit of this year’s edition.

Before the show kicked off properly at about 9 pm, the VIP tables were already occupied with some of the guests who bought the ticket but could not find a space  made themselves comfortable by standing at different corners. For them, what matters was to watch their idols perform.

*Iyanya, Tiwa Savage & Dbanj were among artists that performed at the event
When the show eventually began, it was an unstoppable night of music and comedy fusion. The energetic and beautiful performance by  the Okoye brothers popularly known as P-square left the audience screaming for more.

During their 15-minutes performance, the twin singers not only bamboozled the audience with thir mermerising dance steps but left everyone present satistifed.

Virtually all Nigeria’s greatest artists, comedians and DJ’s gathered for this year’s biggest live entertainment event. This year’s edition featured Adewale Ayuba, P Square, D’ banj, Mavin AllStars, EME All Stars, Choc Boiz, Timaya, David O, Seyi Shay, Omawunmi, Waje, Chuddy K, Burna Boy, Sound Sultan, Kcee, Lynxxx, Vector, Chidinma, Dammy Krane, I.C, Tunde Ednut, Rayce, Olamide, Iyanya, Efa, Flowsick, Shank, Samini, DJ Caise, Ajebutter, Sina Ranbo,Yaw, Linda Ikeji and many others. It was hosted by the three wise men; Basketmouth, Bovi and Buchi  who gave the audience  spice of life with their rib cracking jokes.  The comedians that were present at the event include AY, I go Dye, Gordons, Seyi

Don Jazzy and D’banj: best rivalry of 2012

Don Jazzy and ex-business partner, D’banj were once best of  friends, brothers and professional colleagues. Their rapport and struggle started way back in London, until they decided to take the country by storm when they floated the now rested Mo’hits record label.

As friends, they stayed glued to each other before their friendship went soar. And like cat and mouse, rivalry tore them apart.

Don Jazzy and D’banj, made their split official in March. In posts on his Twitter account, Don Jazzy confirmed rumours that their partnership under the Mo’ Hits umbrella had crumbled. He described the development as “sad but true.”

*Dbanj & Don Jazzy
There had been reports that the two friends had parted ways over some issues, especially D’ banj’s collaboration with American R&B star, Kanye West, and his label, G.O.O.D Music. D’ banj’s interview with American magazine, Ebony,  shortly after, added fire to the speculations, especially where he described Don Jazzy as one of the artistes on the Mo’hits label. Two months after, Don Jazzy floated Marvin Records and signed on artistes previously with Mo’ Hits record label, including Wande Coal, Dr SID D’Prince and Tiwa Savage as the new addition.

In the years they worked together, they reshaped the industry with renowned hip-hop artistes.

To further lend credence to the rivalry, while Kokomaster opened his night club, One Eleven,  on Lagos Island recently, Don Jazzy equally went into the business few days ago when he established his PoP night club located also on the Island.

It is not for nothing that D’ banj snubbed Don Jazzy at the recently held Rhythm Unplugged. At the show, other artistes who went on stage to perform kept hailing, Don Jazzy who sat at the V.I.P corner. But when it was time for D’banj and his brother to mount the stage, he didn’t do same. Instead of paying homage to their buddy(Jazzy) like others, both ignored him.

How celebrities plan to spend Xmas holiday

There is always a plan for Christmas. Almost everyone has one plan or the other to wrap up the year in grand style.
But oftentimes, the anxiety of the Yuletide catches us below the belt and abandons us in the creek without paddle as to what to do, where to be, who to be with, and other one million naira questions.

Sometimes, it helps to know what the Joneses have up their sleeves or where the next door guy or gal is hanging out. Just about any tip to make this Christmas as special as any will help but everyone dreams of the glam Christmas with fairytale-like details and probably will knock over a bank to know what the average celeb star will be doing that day.

But these movie stars aren’t entirely different from the average man in the crowd.  Quite a number of them plan  what the rest of us do every Christmas with no sense of the dramatics. Simple breakfast of rice and chicken, cosy drinks with friends and family and probably push out for some fun in some bars or beaches or a fast trip to the village to see ‘’home people’’ you haven’t seen all year long.

To get the picture that Christmas isn’t all that is extra-terrestrial, be it a star or schmuck, some of your movie idols share how they plan to spend Christmas holiday:

Bob Manuel-Udokwu:

For actor, Bob Manuel, Christmas isn’t going to be a long trip in some far away fancy fun-seeking spot, like a true Igbo man. Bob plans to spend his Christmas holiday in his country home, in Ogidi “ I will spend my Xmas with my family in my home town, Ogidi in Anambra State. Attend thanksgiving, weddings and other functions till the first week of 2013 then, return to  Lagos.”

Actress Uche Joan Iwuanyanwu

Uche who made a big hit in movies like ‘’Under My Pillow’’, ‘’Queen’’s Island, has a different ideas about how she is going to spend the Xmas. For her, the holiday begun long before Christmas comes knocking. “ This Xmas I will be doing a lot! Got lots of family events to attend. Meanwhile I already spent the first two weeks of December relaxing in Dubai. Just got back. Where to next depends on my events”

Doris Simon

I would be seeing my family members. You would agree with me that my job is so time-demanding  that I don’t have time all the time to see them. Aside that, I would be doting on my son as well as my younger ones, who have always stayed true to me. Lastly, I would be giving back to society that has been there for me via the less privileged, however I don’t publicise or make people see that side of me”

Lola Alao

The beautiful Lola Alao has what can be described as a social diary for the Yuletide holiday with almost each day with something different to offer. Her itinerary will make any flight manifest look like a Kindergarten painting on the wall.  “ On December 20th will be at Ikeja G.R.A. For a programme.

On 21st at 68 in Adeniran Ogunsanya. On 22nd at Ife in Osun State. On 24th at Majenta Hotel, Isheri. On 25th at Okla Hotel, Egbeda, Lagos. On 26th at Warehouse Hotel, Toyin Street, Ikeja. On 27th at Gani Adams party. On 28th at Bobby’s Nite Club, Ikorodu. On 29th at Lekki for opening of a new hotel.”

Empress Njamah isn’t planning a White Christmas neither is she dreaming of another home-coming, family reunion thing. She wants an exotic Christmas away from the country. “ I am trying to spend my Xmas away from the regular noise (bangers) in Nigeria and go somewhere quiet but not snowy too. Still planning”, she said but it seems Europe is not in  the cards this time around as most parts are snowing their hearts out at the moment.

Foluke Daramola

I will be spending Xmas with my family in Ghana. We just want to take time out to reminisce and reflect about life and also be together as a family. We also intend to visit the less privileged and friends too and give them gifts.

Ebube Nwagbo

I will be travelling to the East .

Laide Bakare

Her hands are full as she would be looking forward to seeing her new mega bucks movie “Jejere” make

Benita Nzeribe who is presently shooting a new weekly game show for Malta Guinness Low Sugar has said after she completed the shooting, she hopes to travel to the United Kingdom for a week-long holiday.  And thereafter, return to the country refreshed and ready for the next year.
